No more Gold in Edmonton? Ex Says it all.
Just noticed from another board that Edmonton's weeklong Summer midway is no longer called Klondike Days, but after much deliberation, (and likely Edmonton taxpayer money, just like the $ spent renaming of Calgary Trail North and wasting 1$ million on a slogan change that never happened) its been rebranded, called the "Capital Ex".
Does this mean the top hat, cane, and wild frontier atmosphere are gone? Replaced by more mullets and Converse wearers watching Trooper on a steamy July night at the "Ex"? Sounds like 1983 in Toronto.
There's something to be said for tradition and history...

Isn't capital "X" the way most Edmontonians sign their names anyway?

^And three capital X's are on every store front downtown (besides the liquor stores that don't also sell porn).

Well at least this marks the end of Edmonton being jealous or Calgary and inventing historical heritage for the sake of tourism.

I like how Edmonton always refers to themselves as being the "Capital", as if it means anything much, and anyone outside of Edmonton actually cares.

I worked one year at Klondike Days. What a farce. The thing was just a mullet-a-thon. really, it was a non event.

To be fair, when is any local fair/exhibition not a mullet-a-thon?
The wannabe cowboys that emerge in Calgary are almost as bad as the mulletfest in Edmonton. Our only saving grace is that the wannabe cowboys only come out for ten days a year. In Edmonton, the only difference is that the mullets go to the "Ex" for ten days out of the year rather than the mall.

Really, what's the difference?
Same company (Conklin) running the event. The only difference is that we have a rodeo....they have a rodeo every year in October/November with the CFR.
Not a huge difference, and I've been to both. I don't think the attendance figures vastly differ (1M compared to 800K).

Yea, the whole Yukon Gold Rush connection was dubious at best. At least when Calgary was founded there were cowboys in the general vicinity.
Edmonton should have "The Running of the Mullets" down Whyte or something.

It makes sense Klondike Days doesn't hold a candle to the Stampede, my Father and mother in law from Vancouver were in Edmonton for a blues festival last year, so they checked out Klondike Days, they thought it was a joke.

Again, I ask you, what is the difference?
I've been to both multiple times....same rides, both crowded, the only difference being the rodeo.
The Stampede is given more publicity because of the solid marketing. Don't kid yourself though...this isn't the world's greatest outdoor show on earth.
Toronto and Vancouver both have much bigger festivals like these ones...

I go to the Stampede for the rodeo, I find it fun so I do see a difference then going to the CNE or PNE. I also like it that you can sit on grass, unlike the parking lot out in Van, I love going to the Stampede I have a blast. I never really appreciated it until I moved out of Calgary, now I really love going out to it every year I can.

The Stampede isn't confined to the Stampede Grounds. That's the biggest difference.
Do folks dress up for the office in Vancouver as lumberjacks? Do the folks in Toronto dress up for the office as United Empire Loyalists?

It always cracked me up when the newscasters in Edmonton would wear "Klondike" wear during Klondike Days.
Does this mean that they'll now dress up as "X-Rated" stars?
