A Dutch Muslim politician has called for a ban on dogs in The Hague, the third-largest city in the Netherlands.
Islamic legal tradition holds that dogs are "unclean" animals, and some say the call to ban them in Holland and elsewhere represents an attempted encroachment of Islamic Sharia law in Europe.
This latest canine controversy -- which the Dutch public has greeted with a mix of amusement and outrage -- follows dozens of other Muslim-vs-dog-related incidents in Europe. Critics say it reflects the growing assertiveness of Muslims in Europe as they attempt to impose Islamic legal and religious norms on European society.

In Britain, which has become "ground zero" for Europe's canine controversies, blind passengers are being ordered off buses or refused taxi rides because Muslim drivers or passengers object to their "unclean" guide dogs.

In Spain, two Islamic groups based in Lérida -- a city in the northeastern region of Catalonia where 29,000 Muslims now make up around 20% of the city's total population -- asked local officials to regulate the presence of dogs in public spaces so they do not "offend Muslims."

Muslims demanded that dogs be banned from all forms of public transportation including all city buses as well as from all areas frequented by Muslim immigrants. Muslims said the presence of dogs in Lérida violates their religious freedom and their right to live according to Islamic principles.

After the municipality refused to acquiesce to Muslim demands, the city experienced a wave of dog poisonings. More than a dozen dogs were poisoned in September 2011 (local media reports here, here, here, here and here) in Lérida's working class neighborhoods of Cappont and La Bordeta, districts that are heavily populated by Muslim immigrants and where many dogs have been killed over the past several years.

The phrase "If you don't like our (Western) society, go back to your own" is starting to rear its head...

You know, I work with all Muslim guys and I respect them, but they took religion too far. Dedicating your life is one thing, I don't care, but stop trying to change my life as well. Some take their ideals way too far and just need to relax.

Note: I said some; the guys I work with are fine for example. It's the extremists you see in the media who need to chill.

This seems like a good idea, although concessions have to be made for guide dogs. On the other hand, I can kind of see not wanting a dog in your car as they do smell and are dirty. At the end of the day, though, I think you'd just have to suck it up and let the guide dog in your cab.

I dont mind Taxi drivers not accepting blind passengers because of their dogs - its a business decision, but public bus transportation, that is going beyond the realm of ok.

This reminds me that with Spring approaching and two new Golden Retrievers, its almost time for the annual and epic "Grid Search Of The Yard for Dog Poop."

Two Golden Retrievers pooping an average three times per day between the two of them between Nov. 15 and Mar. 15 would be . . . . . about 360 piles of poop spread across about 1.5 acres of cut lawn. I don't bother with the other 2.5 acres of tall grass.

Organized grid search is the only efficient way to go.

How can you be more out of touch with Western Civilization than trying to ban dogs and cats, a $12 billion comfort industry in America alone.

To our Christian friends on the site who feel that us atheists have some kind of unique hate on for Christianity, this too is a ridiculous attempt to force religious beliefs onto a secular society and should be resisted by all right-thinking people. It's just as bad as imposing intelligent design in the classroom and completely unacceptable.If this is a real story, then whatever politician that proposed it should be publicly excoriated.
