I don't really have anything constructive to add that hasn't be said, so I'll just pile on and say I would never consider living in Airdrie and commuting to the city, and I don't understand why anyone would want to if they worked in Calgary. I imagine myself being more and more depressed as I drive into the core 10 times a week!

Parking, gas, mileage, and time vs. a relatively nominal reduction in house prices with 100 extra square feet in yard space? No thanks.

He was assuming you worked downtown in the core and would travel back and forth from lunch. Thus the 10 times into the core.

You said drive into the core 10 times a week.

Technically you only drive into the core once a day, and away from the core once a day. Since you said into the core 10 times....

Thought of some more things about Airdrie for the OP...

It's so flat - there are no hills or valleys to add some geographic character or to add a sort of third dimension. You know in Calgary if you're high up you can look down and see trees, downtown, parks, etc. Or if you're low down you can look up at the same. In Airdrie all you can see are your immediate surroundings. Kind of like the "rows of houses / are bearing down on me" line from that Radiohead song. It's a depressing, oppressive, non-natural feeling
A giant highway bisects the city. It's like a huge version of Hanna or Rosetown, or any other crappy town you go through on your way to Saskatoon. Yuck.
Moving there is illogical - even in this big long thread we have yet to hear of a single good reason to move there. It would be nice if somebody could articulate a rational reason to move to Airdrie (like if you were coming to Calgary from somewhere else you could cite any number of reasons like for a job, to go to University, to enjoy the night life, because you like nice restaurants, lots for families to do like Calaway Park, Heritage Park, Zoo, Science Center, etc.). Airdrie doesn't have any of that. The closest we've come is that one guy who moved there in 1992 - but that's different because it's now 20 years later and it's a different place. I can see why he would stay after putting down roots, but it doesn't help explain why somebody would move there now.
You have one road into Calgary, and that road is backed up on a daily basis.

Seriously OP, if we can save just one guy this thread will have been worth it. Tell us you're at least having second thoughts.

Let me sum it up:

Airdrie is great because:

There are no different people. No Blacks, Reds, Browns, Yellows, Greens, or even beigey-whites. Just Whites baby. Just a sea of pure white, god-fearing, value-having, Hallowe'en costume wearing (but only on Hallowe'en), child-raising, whites.

And the commute is not as bad as everyone thinks.

I just bought a house in airdrie this past summer after living just off 17th ave for about 4 years. My commute to work is about the same so I have no complaints.

While I enjoyed living near 17th it wasn't enough to keep me there. The options were to buy a house in a new community on the outskirts or stay in an apartment. I was tired of apartment life, and everything about it.

I bought the exact same house in Airdrie, by the same builder in south Calgary and saved approximately $30,000 - $40,000. I got my house for less than list price by the builder, but that's enough for me. I'm closer to work, and downtown than the same house in the south.

So I could live on the outskirts and actually have a longer drive and live in areas that have poor traffic, too many people and pay more. Didn't make sense to me. Airdrie has all the same amenities as these outskirt communities with way more traffic.

My drive to work is exactly 20 minutes, I timed it door to door this morning. Same time frame as when I lived in the beltline.

When I need to go shopping on a weekday I can go to several places all very close to each other and still be home in an hour. I simply couldn't do that in the beltline.

When I get home from work in the summer I can be on secondary highways on my bike in seconds. Previously I would have to battle with rush hour traffic for 25 minutes to get out on the road.

Nightlife is irrelevant for me since I've cut back my drinking. I prefer to go watch live music and try to avoid the chachi fake pubs of the beltline. My gf and I have no problem driving into Calgary to watch a band we like or go to a restaurant we like. Now I drive in to meet up with friends I get my gf to drive or I drive and don't drink.

If I were single it would likely be a different story but I'm completely happy in Airdrie so far.

I take it that all of our Airdrie residents who have these crazy commute times all work at Cross Iron Mills? That must be it.

Otherwise how is it that people who live 10 minutes North of me can get everywhere in the city in 20 minutes less than me? It makes no sense at all.

Actually when you move to Airdrie they give you a hover car. That cuts down on the commute time.

They leave for work at 5:00 AM.

I think the big thing is that they hop on Deerfoot\QE2 and head to Memorial (if they work downtown). There are no lights until you get to the core. Traffic usually flows well in the morning along this route.
Where as in the city people travel on roads like McLeod and such that are full of lights and slow you down a lot.
These are just my thoughts as I have not traveled this route for rush hour.

I do know going home can be a PITA as Deerfoot backs up a lot until you get past 64th or Beddington.
