Great news.

The Herald article above didn't seem to work for me, here's another:

All they need is a load of inner city land including enough room for sufficient free parking....seems highly unlikely

Well, the West End Rec Centre opened a few years ago, North Central got Cardel Place, the NE got the new Genesis Centre, the far NW is also getting one. Two of the SE ones are in the nearer SE (Quarry Park and Great Plains) and the other is far, far SE (Seton). Major rec centres will now be fairly well geographically distributed.

If they level all of the grow ops in new Brighton, they should be able to throw down a six-plex

Does anyone know where the far NW one is proposed to be?

Considering the majority of the SE currently uses the Trico center, I am not surprised by this at all.

Sorry I couldn't hear you over the sound of my latte sipping while admiring my twenty five million dollar bridge (and wondering what I was going to do with all the extra time I don't spend commuting).

All kidding aside I am glad the city was able to make this happen, despite the total 180 the Feds threw at them.

Anyway, great news about these rec centres. Anyone who's stepped foot in the Genesis Centre knows how desperately these facilities are needed. Genesis, including its library is absolutely packed. Keep in mind that three of these 4 centres will have a new library branch as well.

It certainly was no easy task to make the financing work when the $100m vanished. City Staff did yeoman's work. The Mayor was insistent that we make this a reality. Kudos as well to all the volunteer societies in the NW and SE that did so much work to make this happen.
We booked our kids for swimming lessons at 9 am on Saturday mornings. At 8:45 or so when we get there, we already have to park in the back 40 of the parking lot.

And technically, the Genesis Centre is still under construction, they are still finishing up. But knowing how nice it is to have a facility like that close by, I am glad than other Calgarians will also have that oppurtunity.

Is there a reason the City wants to compete with private gyms? Why even bother with exercise equipment in these facilities?

Isnt what is really needed in Calgary is more gyms, more rinks, more pools, more indoor fields etc?

Of the 3 going to the SE, only the Seton facility is of any real use. The other 2 are just small minor facilities. I might be in the minority but why bother with minor facilities in a city like Calgary. Why not a 3 pool facility, or a 6 rink facility.

Yeah, might as well go as big as possible. If they do it right then these rec centres should pay for themselves through the user fees. They should be planning for at least 10 more rec centres. 4 will not meet the demand.

Are there really gyms close to those areas though? Also, I imagine many people want to be able to swim and use the gym under the same membership.

The Quarry Park facility will be a smaller facility, but it's a long ways from there to the new Seton one. Its good to have smaller facilities so that its not so far away from everyone.

The Grain Plans one is pretty much just rinks and box lacrosse fields. It will probably not get the same architectural quality as the others, saving money. It's also not really intended to serve a community, but the whole city, so it's close to Glenmore and Stoney Trail.

The NW one and the Seton one are already huge facilities.

It's great that we're getting new facilities, but the locations at the periphery of the city are certainly not ideal. Average distance from "customers" is increased by not building in the middle of the communities, and they will induce demand for costly sprawl.

Induce? Or accept reality that the city IS going to grow and know that in a few years, there will be plenty of other houses around them.

Sure the city will grow... so leave an empty space there, and once those houses are built and have paid for themselves, then you can build stuff for them!

What the hell is this? Pleasure skating and non-competitive activities? Build 2 real rinks and allot a portion of the ice time to public skate/figure skating etc. This is such airy fairy garbage, did Druh Farrel get her fingers in this?
