Well I have a 1.6ghz and 1024 megs of ram, and run a minimal install of windows xp sp2 (about 300 megs installed), so I might not be the person to ask.
The only time I've really noticed a slowdown is accessing opera through the widgets for the first time after startup. Graphically, I notice a fps lag when playing cs:source on servers with over 25 player while having all the desktop graphics running, so I usually turn off objectdock and the widgets before I play. Even then, it isn't really a big deal unless I'm high gunning for 44-4 score, then it can get frustrating.

for image files, I'd use photobucket
About the things in the corner, that's how I access all my folders and apps.
It sits on my desktop all collapsed like this:
And fully expanded looks like this:
My computer name is "Gritty" and my username is "Bionic Regehr v1.0" (little joke between my brother and I, for instance, it's funny to see "Bionic Regehr's Running Processes", my other laptop is named 'Bionic Regehr v2.0').

it's a konfabulator widget that I built myself.
ANd when I say built myself, I mean altered for my specific needs from an existing widget.

I formatted a post, but I guess I must've bluescreened or something while I wasn't at my computer because everything is gone, so here goes again.

That's not a Windows Messenger icon that's an MSN Messenger icon. Two entirely different programs.

With windows messenger, depending on the size of network you have you would want its service running for NOC messages etc.
Just make sure you direct it to use an ephemeril port in your DMZ and then if you follow Cisco laws of practice all ephemeril ports are blocked. Thats all I do - if you are a Network Engineer, log the events on that port and watch the number of hits and misses. Its actually quite funny - and yes it is a potential security breach - IP traces of hits normally come from either Arizona(4th), NY State(3rd), Montreal(2nd), Germany (1st), and Belgium(5th) (not alot from Asia surprisingly given the media's recent attempt to make the public afraid of Chinese hackers).
Edit. - If you are a Sys Admin you could simply push out a domain policy (Server 2K3) that restricts access of that program as well. Also if you are a large company set up SystemRoot %user% to log attempts to use the program (could also do it on the network side but that only logs IP and note %user%s). Its very handy if you have a computer user access policy in case a manager needs to "let someone go" and needs something more compelling in case you get a wrongfull simissal suit.
