Nice to hear Howse is closing in on a return.

Lets hope he doesn't take much of a step back when he gets clearance.

One good thing, he could still skate, so he should still have his legs despite the layoff.

Not sure if Horak got sent back or not, but if Howse and Horak get to play together, you'll see Howse out of his 0'fer in no time

yeah, I hope they can get something going offensively. Horak has long dry spell himself, so maybe they can both break their scoring slump when playing together.

The most important thing for Howse is to stay healthy for a change. If he can do that, the goals will come automatically sooner or later.

Yesterday's shutout earned Joni Ortio another start tonight and he was the first star of the game in 3-2 (shootout) win. 37 saves and didn't allow any goals in the shootout. Great start, a pleasant surprise I'm sure. Let's hope he gets some playoff time this season.

Seems like Markus Granlund is struggling a bit but I don't know what the story is. Ice time has gone down.

Michael Ferland already has 1 goal and 2 assists after 2 periods in a game against Swift Current.

Turner Elson already -3 as the Rebels were blitzed in the 1st period by the Hitmen (4-0 Calgary after 13 minutes). Ouch.

Joey Leach is also in action, Sven Bärtschi and Tyler Wotherspoon will be later tonight, while Max Reinhart is once again not playing tonight. Any updates on him?

Notre Dame is rolling along (with a 16-10-3 overall record) and Nick Larson had the game-winning goal in the Fighting Irish's 2-1 win over Bowling Green on Friday night.

Jeff Hollick (the Ice's play-by-play guy) indicated that Reinhart MAY be back on Tuesday. He's close and they're in a playoff spot, so I imagine they're just being careful here.

Through two periods the winterhawks are up 4-2.

Sven Bartschi with a hat trick.

1 Even strength goal
1 Powerplay goal
1 Shorthanded goal.

All with Ty Rattie out of the lineup.

Boston College plays Boston University next week in the FINALS of the annual Beanpot tournament for Boston-area dominance.

question for our prospect guru's on CP:

Which juniour players will be making the move to the pros (AHL) this fall?

For the Heat Gurus:

Do you see any players making a real push for a spot with the big club this fall?
(my obvious guess is irving and question marks being nemeisz/byron).

expect 5 players to turn pro: 2010 draftees Max Reinhart, Michael Ferland and Joey Leach all finish their junior careers and will turn pro, but Leach has not signed to an ELC yet. Sven Bärtschi and Turner Elson are also AHL eligible because they turn 20 before December 31, so I guess they turn pro as well. Bärtschi will realistically land a spot on the Flames IMO, so my guess is that the Heat will welcome 4 new faces. I could see Reinhart and Ferland as top-line material (maybe on a line with Ryan Howse?), Elson probably as a 3rd line winger and Leach as a 2nd-pairing D-man in Abbotsford next season.

The only Flames prospects returning to junior for another year will be 2011 draftees Tyler Wotherspoon and Laurent Brossoit.

Other Flames picks that are eligible to turn pro:

Nick Larson - 22 (23 in November) - Will be done 3 years of college
John Ramage - 21 (Today!) - Will be done 3 years of college
Bill Arnold - 19 (20 in May) - Will be done 2 years of college

Not sure what these players plans are, as they all have at least 1 year of college left, but they are all old enough to turn pro.

None are under contract yet.

As for players pushing for a spot on the Flames:

Nemisz (21)
Baertschi (19)
Byron (23)
Horak (20)
Bouma (21)
Irving (23)
Reinhart (19)

I'd expect all those players to make strong pushes, as well as Brodie who has already graduated to full time NHL duties.

Real long shots:

Aliu (22)
Howse (21)
Martin (21)
Leach (20)
Breen (22)
Wahl (21)
Ferland (19)

so of the ahl/juniour guys that could possibly fighting for a spot in camp is the below fair with regards to what position each would be battling for?:

Nemisz (21) - 3rd line winger
Baertschi (19) - 2/3 line winger
Byron (23) - 3rd line winger
Horak (20) - 3rd line C
Bouma (21) - 4th line winger/C
Irving (23) - backup tender
Reinhart (19) - 3/4 line C

Turning pro for sure: Max Reinhart, Joey Leach & Michael Ferland
Possibly turning pro: Sven Baertschi
Heat players pushing for NHL spots: Lance Bouma, Greg Nemisz, Clay Wilson, Leland Irving

-Reinhart and Baertschi would have been competitive in the AHL this year. Ferland probably also would have been pretty good at that level. Leach likely needs a year to get used to the pro game, but he's tremendously underrated.
-I would argue that Reinhart is better at being what the Flames want Horak to be than Horak is, which may not bode well for Roman's NHL future. That said, he'll put the work in.
-Bouma is likely ear-marked for a bottom six role (possibly the 4th line energy role he's fit into lately).
-Nemisz is likely ear-marked for a third line role.
-The Flames have a LOT of defenders, so Wilson (and Connelly) may get caught in the shuffle.

Can anyone comment on Ferland's game?

Anyone think he could be the surprise out of camp? Maybe giving TKO and/or Jackman a run for their money?

I really don't think there is any doubt about it. Baertschi is the most prolific scorer in the entire CHL with a 1.94 pts/game average (Nail Yakupov ranks second with 1.90 pts/game). He simplay CANNOT stay in Juniour, given that he has very clearly demonstrated that he is a ridiculously dominant player at this level.

Baertschi is virtually guaranteed to turn pro next year—without question.

Now, if Baertschi does turn pro next year, chances are very high that he will begin the season with the Flames, and I suspect given their investment in him and the suspect depth in the top six that he will almost certainly make the team as a top-six forward.

yeah, he really is. Nothing left to prove at that level, and just in case he doesn't stick with Calgary, he is AHL-eligible as well. So I'd say the chances of him staying in the WHL are zero.
