UN failure number 6 billion
A slight exaggeration, but this illustrates that once again the UN in its current format is a complete failure.
From the scandals involving finances, tothe worst human rights offenders being named to their human rights bodies, to its failures in peace keeping to the disgusting Durban and Durban II conferences
The UN now adds to its disgrace as Russia and China block the UN resolution that would condemn President Bashar alAssad and his government and allow the Arab League to implement its plan to end the violence.
This veto happens in the face of another slaughter that resulted in the death of over 230 Syrian's including 100 woman and children.
Its really time to dissolve the UN or leave its charitable organizations in place with serious reforms and end its other roles. Its time for Canada to stop writing checks to the UN until it reforms

Is there any reason why the Arab League can't go forward with their plans? I know NATO ignores UN resolutions all the time. Not arguing with you about the UN being useless just wondering if this really does anything to stop the Arab League from doing what is necessary.

And the Liberals said it was an embarrassment to Canadians that we didn't win a seat on the UN security council.

What kind of void would be created if the UN were dissolved? I do agree that there are some disgraceful acts or no-acts, but there is also soke good work done by the UN. Its not that no other group ciuld undertake that work, but that infrastructure is really enormous. Could we really see some of the same positives without it?

I believe that the Arab league wants the justification and legitimacy that the UN could supposedly apply with the condemnation resolution.
They could probably go ahead without it, but Syria would scream that it was a unilateral action.
I wonder if China is going to ship more weapons into Syria like they did into Libya?

The UN is an outdated and completely ineffective entity and has been for decades.
Serious question...have UN sanctions EVER had the desired results?

Considering that most of the world does not value human rights and freedom the way we do, it is pretty much impossible for the U.N. to function the way we want it to.

I would have no problem with some of the other UN missions in place from a charitable, disaster relief and health standpoint, but with serious reforms since it always seems that there a tinge of corruption to their actions.
But their record on Peacekeeping is ineffective and downright stupid anyways, and the world wouldn't miss it since it doesn't prevent war and genocide anyways. And their Human Rights actions and conferences have been suborned anyways, so the world wouldn't miss it.
Unfortunately the Security Council doesn't work anyways, and national interests are always going to take priority over global interests anyways.
If your going to do peace keeping, you have to change it to peace enforcement. You give it their own heavily armed military and it makes its strategic decisions without inputs from nations.
The problem though again is that your going to end up going against national interests, and end up in a shooting war with one of the great powers.
I don't think that an international body will ever work in terms of war preventions/conflict resolution as long as you have proxy based nation building.

The UN is a corrupt, ineffective, out of date agency, that basically tries to redistribute wealth.

How is an agency representing an international body of nations spanning the globe ever going to cooperate fully when it comes to war and sanctions? Is it realistic to expect it to?
What do you replace it with? Nothing? A return to the alliance system?

That's the problem and that's why the security apparatus of the UN is a monumental waste of money and time.
There is no answer, in the day and age when people complain about countries interfering in other nations business and calling it imperialism and conquest mentality is the UN any different.

The fundamental purpose of the United Nations is to prevent major armed conflicts between multiple developed nations. In this it has been singularly successful, a record that no other organization, Empire, Nation or alliance in human history can come close to matching.
Considering the disparate desires and goals of the nations of the world today, establishing a replacement to the UN would be titanically difficult, prohibitively expensive and almost certainly result in an organization with nearly identical flaws.
Either Canada withdrawing from the UN or the complete dissolution of the organization are terrible ideas.

The UN is the biggest compromise in history.
It's hard to say that like it's a good thing, but really it is.
The UN looks like a mess sometimes because it represents a world of mess. That the price we pay for being inclusive.
This thread reeks of western supremacy issues.
Also ,if you judge the UN based on what you see on the news ,you're being stupid.
Catastrophies and scandals are news . When the UN does something right, it's not news. Yes ,there have been succesful peacekeeping operations. Those are just the ones that don't make the news.
