Basically you're looking at something like this, but on a larger scale and with a system underneath that allows it to slide out.

Yes. Ideally it would be supported by the hinge/brackets that slide away from the wall and not an additional leg/arm

Here's a guide to making one (has a leg though)
http://www.readymade.com/projects/su...old_down_table
I like the idea of it being floating, the only issue I see is that people seem to frequently wind up leaning across the table and putting a decent amount of weight on it, not sure you could support that kind of weight with just the hinge.

That doesn't slide out away from the wall after though. The making it fold is easy. It is the slide away from the wall part that isn't

This would be my main concern, you would probably need to place an additional support on the side opposite the wall but that could be just removable leg or support

Did you look at the link I posted. Basically some sort of rail system and the link I posted says you can get them to support up to 1000kg's

Check your PM. I have a rough design for you that will work and you can buy all from Homehardware. Gauges and dimensions not given but I am busy and wanted to give you the idea quickly.

If you go with slides, you need something for a pretty heavy weight. Lee Valley has these 400 lb bad boys, which I think might be a good place to start.
http://www.leevalley.com/US/hardware...614,43620&ap=1
Another option would be to build something around some pedestal table extenders, although I haven't thought exactly how you'd do it.
http://www.leevalley.com/US/hardware...,43586&p=40139
Either way, reinforcing the wall in such a way to support the weight will be key.
Speaking of the wall, what you really need to do is have a full-size scoreboard that lights up on the wall... it would be hidden behind the mural when the pingpong table is up, but add an extra touch of awesome when the table's down.
Good luck with it! And good luck convincing your wife... mine always vetos my awesome ideas like this.

Even if it slides out, the sliders will still be in your way to prevent you from going around the wall side, so the best that you're going to do is to be able to reach over there to swat the ball. Just have the fold down area be 18 inches wider than a ping pong table, then put an 18 inch strip of outdoor carpet on the surface along the wall, and the rest of the surface will be your table.

Depends on how you mount the sliders. I know they are meant to mount on the sides but I wonder if they would still support the same amount of weight turned sideways and mounted underneath?
Mounting this way would make it easier for the addition of hinges too.

Not if you put the sliders a foot or 2 in from the end of table. since you rarely move that far in front anyways. I will take some measurements when I get home. To see what kind of space we are actually dealing with.

Can you PM it to me too? I'm interested to see what you came up with.

Why not just make all 4 legs foldable and then just have brackets to hang the table on the wall?
Otherwise heavy duty undermount drawer slides. There'll be a few rails stretching from the table back to the wall, but unless you run around the table as part of playing that shouldn't matter.
So hang a long piece of wood on the wall with some kind of hinges, then attach the drawer slides to the wood, and the other part of the drawer slides to the table. You'll have to have legs on the far ends likely, there are slides that'll handle many hundreds of pounds but I don't know how stable they'd be with a chunk of wood hanging out into space.
Only downside is they'll be visible on your "painting", but that'll be the case no matter what.
EDIT: That's what I get for not reading the whole thread

Definitely not, think of trying to break a 2x4 sideways and then edgewise. Much harder edgewise.
But you could put vertical pieces of wood on the underside to let you mount the slides as intended, or see if there are undermount slides that can support that weight.
I'm with valo403, the biggest concern isn't supporting the table, it's supporting people when the inevitable lean or trip and fall or whatever occurs. If the table is on slides extending 6 or 8 feet from the wall (4 feet for the table, + the gap), that's an incredible amount of potential leverage for where the slides mount to the wall... lag bolts into concrete type stuff.
Which makes the hinge design at the wall very tough.
Seriously, folding legs, hang it on the wall.
