Well, I will say that the Lykes family ( major Florida cattle folks ) have done a lot to restore and preserve much of the land near the Everglades headwaters (Kissimmee River and Fisheating Creek) . In doing so they closed off much of their previously publicly accessible land due to poaching (lots of alligators, deer, endangered birds there) and littering. Pissed a lot of people off. But it saved thousands of acres until the government could afford to buy it. The Lykes did a better job of policing the area, IMO.

That being said, I don't think species would become extinct if we stopped eating meat. There is enough concern in the general public to prevent that.

I do look forward to the cattle drive in Okeechobee this summer though. Never seen one. That's our cowtown.

You would be actually surprised at the sophistication, cleanliness and treatment of the animals in these places. Healthy, Disease free livestock is much more profitable than the other alternative.

Little known to people North of Claresholm is that Fort Macleod has a Horse rendering plant and believe it or not Horse meat, outside of North America, is huge business.

I have been to numerous feedlots around here, some of the biggest ones, say 15,000 to 20,000 head.

I would say they are decent for the most part. Keep in mind these are corporations that are maximizing profit/efficiency. The cows are there for one purpose .....to stand there and eat all the barley/corn they can to gain weight. The cattle are kept as healthy as possible, but live in cramped living conditions.

Dairy barns are very clean, but again cramped. I don't know how the cows feel about this.

The hutterites seem to have the fanciest barns and technology, and they have lots of money to keep their pens clean so as to minimize disease.

Here's a great comment from the article:

A Message to Bob Barker:
Bob, perhaps I'd take your opinion more seriously if you did not represent a show which: Glamorizes and celebrates gross materialism, Exhibits disgusting amounts of product placement and advertising lies designed to wash over and brainwash millions of gullible sedate television viewers all the while overtly equating products with success and winning, Flagrantly flaunting your 'stable of models' 'Barker's Beauties' designed to fawn over the products exhibiting their overt sexuality in a submissive manor clearly promoting degrading model for women (some of whom you were gettin' a little on the side from, as I recall). Although I do appreciate your concern and love for animals, the fact is, your life's work has, in my opinion, caused more damage to the collective minds of Americans and the World than any Rodeo ever will.

What is closer to the truth? Domestic animals = rodeo animals? Please expand as it makes no sense to me. You could conceivably compare dog shows to the rodeo but that's hardly your standard domestic pet.

And who made authoritative comments? The guy who posted the video? The guy I originally quoted? You? Me?

Domestic pet:

Sits around the house, goes for a walk, runs in a field

Rodeo animal:
Travels around the country in a trailer, is ridden by numerous men (hey, maybe they're comparable to fotze's mom!), tries to kill said men in many cases, is tackled by competitors (steer wrestling), is roped by competitors (calf roping), is raced around barrels, is subjected to somewhat dangerous races around a track.

I don't see how you think they are similar. I'm not even against rodeo or think that the animals are necessarily tortured or anything. I just don't see how a domestic animal has any similarities to a rodeo animal. They live totally different lives.
"To compare a domestic cat to a rodeo animal is silly." - I was referencing this. To elaborate on why it is not silly has less to do with the activities as it does with how they are treated. Having grown up on a ranch and spent much time with ranchers (who also tend to participate in rodeos and similar events), I'm aware of the relationship between owner and animal. It is very similar to the domestic pet / owner relationship. In fact, I would say that it can be an even stronger relationship due to its symbiotic nature; it's not just the animals relying on the person. Sure, it doesn't translate into a romp in the park while wearing cute doggy booties, but on a much more practical level, the care and attention for these animals is likely far better across the board than if you were to look at the care and attention of domestic pets.

Anyone else think they made the stampede package look awful.
I mean we as Calgarians know it isnt the best thing ever but it is better for tourists than portrayed in the video.

Only thing they could have done to make it look worse was to put "Calgary" in...

...wait for it...

Comic Sans.

I don't think you can necessarily blame The Price is Right for that, though. I would imagine the promotional spots or the footage for them are likely provided by the Stampede themselves.

There was a review in the New Yorker or Atlantic of a book about the foodie movement. Apparently there are people who believe animals taste better when they are tortured to death. There was a scenario in which several upscale families spent a weekend in the country and brought their kids to watch a pig be tortured to death. And yes, it was tortured. The rationale was that the pig knows its place, and understands and condones what is happening to it. Ha!

Wasn't really great marketing for the city as a tourist destination in general. More or less made Calgary look like a dirt field and a paved field with a gondola. A skyline shot wouldn't have killed them.
