Yeah the wireless network name can really only be seen by anyone within range of the wireless...the only part that may become embarrassing is if you have a friend or relative come over with a laptop or ipad or something and want to connect to your wireless network while they are there...might be awkward to tell aunt betty to click and connect to "hugedickhousehold" to get access to the internet. lol.

Yes this tends to be the case. And also I live in a condo complex and am definitely one of the younger people that lives in here. I'm sure it doesnt take a genius to figure out the hugedickhousehold is probably the house full of college kids.

I had an old router that went on the fritz. I was trying to troubleshoot, so I turned off my security to see if that was part of the problem. Within 5 minutes, I had a guy - let's call him "Bill Smith" - connect to my router and start using my internet. I punted him and carried on. He connected again. I punted him again. Same thing happened. I started to get annoyed. I disconnected my router because it still wasn't working properly.
I eventually got a new router, and was setting it up. Sure enough, "Bill Smith" connects to my router while my security was off for a couple minutes. I don't think it was an automated thing either, because it always took a bit for him to connect.
So, I got my new router set up, and named it
I hope that jerk sees the network name every damn day.
Jerk.

in my neighbourhood, it seems like people have defaulted to one of two naming conventions for their SSID: the first group uses their own name, such as johnsmith; the second group leaves it as unsecured "default".
i'm not sure which makes me laugh more...although in fairness at least one group has secured their network...

Pornserv3312 is the name of mine. No idea who lives in unit 3312, but it's a couple who strike me as the prudish type. Every time I notice that is the network I'm connected to, I get a kick out of it and think they must be totally humiliated and wish to move, or I imagine them getting into a big fight over it because they don't know what to do about it. The novelty never wears off.

Meh. At home I've always used [firstname's]_network. Lack of creativity I guess.
Although I've named my wireless at work "The Internet". Always makes me laugh, because I know somewhere there, somebody is trying to connect to it and can't figure out why he needs a password to connect to 'The Internet".

The newer Linksys routers are great for making sure the connection is secured. Typically I bypass the setup when hooking one up for a friend. They now force you to run through the setup before it will enable the wireless. The setup is simple; basically asks you to name it and create a password. But unlike old routers that gave wifi just by plugging in, this forces a certain level of security.

I always get a little scared when I am scanning for a network and 'skynet' comes up.

You must live at my parents/brother's house...
My favorite part is that my bro will give me the password for the wifi he's set up for my dad, but he refuses to tell my skynet's password. I guess he's afraid I'll unleash judgement day or something by using his wifi on my iPhone.
