Maybe it's not all laid out yet, but is the part on the right the bike path lane? Seems a little small for two-way traffic, no?

Those look like temporary electrical lines. I would imagine that will be taken Out before it is open.

Temporary electric lines wouldn't be in conduit. The bike lanes are in the centre, with pedestrian path on either side. The final surface gets built up on top of what you see. The bike lanes are asphalt I believe, and the rest is now concrete tiles, after the original granite tiles were cut due to cost at the beginning.

The bike lanes take up about half the total width. The pedestrian walk is up a curb from the bike lanes, with wheelchair ramp curb cuts every so often. There will be trench drains at the bottom of each curb, so that water does not drain into the river, and also, gets removed from the walkway without traveling over the entire surface.

Crossing this bridge is going to cut about 5 minutes from my walking time to work, and since it's covered I won't get the brutal wintertime westerly winds in the morning while crossing the river. Seems like the bridge is mostly going to benefit people living in Sunnyside.

I'm curious, which side of 7th St do you live on? Because of the way the Memorial Drive crossing is set up it seems to me only the people 7th St and East will really benefit a lot.

It will benefit walkers in Sunnyside with a shorter walk, but also will give walkers that use other bridges less congestion on those bridges, especially with bikes.

For cyclists, it will benefit anyone coming from the West, or for the North down 10th Street.

The top is covered but the sides are wide open aren't they? It's not fully enclosed.

Actually, anyone going to the central part of downtown, who lives more than 300 m North East of 7th St., will have a slightly shorter commute by taking the Princes Island Bridge.

The only people who will have a shorter walk, using the Peace Bridge and the current crosswalks, will be those people who live in the first half block on either side of 7th street. The next block out will have the same commute time as they currently have, and for anyone a block further out or more, it will be shorter to take one of the two existing bridges.

People are just going to make their own crossing between 8th and 9th streets, rather than spend the extra 5 minutes to cross at 7th.

This bridge is going to be used more by cyclists, joggers and walkers than it is by people commuting from Sunnyside. I can't wait to be able to use this bridge when I'm running and I don't have to dodge bikers and walkers.

It's looks fantastic too.

I'm on 7th St's east side. My landlord was telling me as I moved in that as a bonus I would benefit from the new bridge.

...
True. The current ped bridge under the C-train near 10th St W is very narrow.

One thing you can be sure of in Calgary, there will be boneheads with 5m leashes, dogs without leashes, walkers in the bike lane, bikers in the walking lane and roller bladers all over the place. People will walk ten abreast as well.

Right now the sides are partially covered, but yeah now that you mention it probably not enough to block the wind in any significant way.

Oh hey, guess what? It's been delayed again...

Quote:
Concrete damage will delay Calgary's $25M Peace Bridge by two more months

Calgarians hoping to traverse the controversial Peace Bridge may have to wait another two months.

Crews building the span have discovered cracks on prefabricated concrete slabs that have caused more delays to the opening of the $25 million project that was designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

Ald. Druh Farrell said about 10% of the concrete slabs on the bridge's deck were cracked or damaged and are now being fixed on site.

Farrell said she has asked bureaucrats to set a firm date for its opening and she was told it may take a couple of months before Calgarians are able to use it.

The bridge was originally slated to open last year but it has been plagued by problems including bad welds determined by city inspectors.

Has to be a pretty bad weld for a government inspector to red flag it. I think I will stick to the 10th street bridge :P

Not really, the inspector could be trying to cover his a**. I know I would. A fault can still be approved as-is from engineer review or with a fix as directed from the review. Planes fly with cracks in them all the time.

As someone who was actually in favour of this brige, I have to say they sure are doing their best to get me to switch sides.
Seriously, has a single thing actually gone according to plan on this bridge?

We're already what, a year and a half overdue, and now they are throwing another delay in?
