So I emailed the Shaw rep back about her request for us to put a separate, free wifi modem on our premises in January. I asked a bunch of questions like what if someone uses our node to do illegal things, if non-Shaw guests to our office can use it as well (with a special code or something because she worded her original email in a way that made it sound beneficial for our clients and guests), if there is any incentive for our office to use the Shaw wifi instead of our existing open wifi, etc.

I'll paraphrase the answers when she replies.

^ Well, that was much ado about nothing, I suppose. Shaw responded very promptly, and to paraphrase:

- It is not part of their new wifi network
- It is simply a second modem to provide open wifi through a completely separate connection
- They are offering it to business customers on Broadband 50 and higher just as an added perk (or maybe they are overstocked on modems!!)

So, it turns out that I'm not so special after all. It doesn't really provide us with any added benefit as we already have an open wifi spot for clients, guests, and neighbours that is physically separated and on the outside of our main firewall, so it would just be another device on the rack.

In this case, sarcasm or not, you brought it up and it was an obvious attempt to troll people, which failed.
The post had Mrs. Lovejoy in it. You really didn't get any sarcasm from that at all?

I added that after in an attempt to avoid any further scorn.

100KM range Wifi = 100k+ networks in Calgary = such interference with each other that its 22Mb/s speeds will lucky to reach 56kb/s at any sizable range.

Still pretty nice to see a standard that supports it.

Could be a great sign of things to come for people in more rural areas. My folks are use outside of calgary and getting them fast internet is essentially a nightmare.

I would guess that consumer routers won't have the power to send the signal that far. Things will get awfully messy if they have the full range. Can you imagine trying to search for your network first time you set up your iphone
