What companies are you talking about.
I very much doubt that Holt Renfrew matches prices, if your going to buy stuff there, you don't care about price.

No. Are you going to walk into Rodeo Drive store and ask them to price match with the Coach Outlet in the mall?

There stuff is very expensive and I suspect their sales staff works on commision so you might be able to haggle a bit...
but I wouldn't specifically bring up price matching... they'll probably tell you to shop at Sears if you want price matching.

I wanted to buy some ties that Hugo Boss has on sale on their website. I know they are probably comission based but it looks silly on their part to charge more than the actual company.

I think part of buying stuff at Holt Renfrew, is to say you bought something at Holt Renfrew. For the ridiculous prices you end up paying there, just book yourself a weekend in Vegas, and buy the exact same stuff at the Fashion Show Mall across from The Wynn, and get it for a third of the price, and use your savings to enjoy the rest your weekend.

This can be applied to almost any retail shopping in Calgary. We get hosed so badly I refuse to buy much of anything locally now.

So why aren't you just buying them from the website??

+1 - I refuse to buy any clothing in Calgary anymore unless it's an absolute emergency and instead head south to Cali, Phoenix, or Vegas at least 4 times per year and spend a fraction of the price down there. That being said, if you want to fork over 4 bills for a pair of True Religions that you can get in the US on sale for $99 and you can afford it then all the power to you. That being said, I don't know enough or want to know enough about fashion to be able to know whether a pair of jeans are this or last years model or a Hugo Boss suit or whatever it may be as it doesn't matter to me.

+2 -I can't justify spending the money on clothes here when I know how little I would pay in the US. I even claim it all at customs and as long as it is just clothes, I haven't paid a cent of GST or any other charges. I stock up when I hit Vegas so I am significantly over my limit upon return.

Why do you claim them at customs?
Just take off the tags and say they're yours and you brought them with you on the trip

When you're only gone for 4 days and you return with half a Banana Republic store and a bunch of clothes for your kids it is hard to say you brought them with you Plus I have an irrational fear of getting pulled over for the additional search and I'm a terrible liar .... so far, has worked out fine

Setting aside the moral implications about breaking the law, getting caught simply isn't worth the risk. You can lose your stuff, have to pay up to 80% duty, and even have your car siezed. Link
Never mind the fact that your name is now on file. No more getting through customs quick; you will be searched every single time you cross the border again. All that to save 5-10% extra on the clothes that you just saved 25-90% buying in the States.

100% correct. My friend is a border officer and this is exactly the response he's given when one of our friends said the same thing.

When in Canada I buy all of my dress clothes at Holt Renfrew or Harry Rosen. I never liked Harry much until both of my salesmen went there. PM me if you want their details, as they are awesome. Harry has a great selection of Boss and Eton which is mostly what I wear.
That being said, I seldom shop in Canada anymore. I'm in San Francisco a few times a year that I just pick up stuff at the Hugo Boss store in Westfield Centre. My salesgirl there can order anything I see on the online store and they match whatever the online price is. Even at regular price it's about 40% cheaper than buying in Canada. If you have it shipped to a US address they seldom charge sales tax and if you are in Washington and show your Alberta ID they don't charge sales tax.
I still buy a bit at Harry in Calgary and I bought a suit at Holt last year, but 80% of my shopping is cross border. I always declare my goods as it's the law, and I don't want any future hassels at the border. If I can't afford the GST, I shouldn't have been buying it in the first place.
