Keystone oil sands pipeline rejected
This was kind of unexpected news.

The U.S. government has denied an application by TransCanada to build the Keystone XL pipeline, the State Department announced Wednesday.
A statement released by the department says it doesn't preclude TransCanada applying again with a different route.

Huh. Didn't see that one coming. Glad I cashed in some stocks yesterday.
Between this and SOPA I'd say the Obama administration is doing more harm than good to the economy...

Not unexpected at all. You didn't think Obama was going to let House Republicans force his hand in an election year, did you? This issue is already beyond reason, and into the realm of political football in which indecision or pushing tough decisions past election time will rule the day.

It was rejected so that the new route would be applied for again. Trans-Canada has already said that they're re-applying.

From the sounds of it, Obama just used this as a political stunt to blame the republicans for something to make himself look better.

I'm not terribly surprised. It will be allowed with the new routing after the November election.

Chinese money is just as good.
This could hurt Obama on the Campaign trail.
Turned down a wack of jobs, and access to energy not from the middle east because of the Envionmental crowd.
Expect to hear the Repbulican's screaming about lost opportunities over the next couple of weeks, especially with Canada looking to take their oil elsewhere.

Whether Obama wins or not.
Wonder what our Prime Minister is saying behind the scenes.

How much money did they pay the first time.
The tempting thought is to tell them to pound sand and go West.

You guys don't get it; the Republicans gave him a couple months for him to make a decision that required much more analysis given the rerouting, etc.
Given the tight deadline and inability to do a proper analysis, he was forced to reject the current proposal, but TCPL is free to resubmit the new plans for approval.

What's with all the negativity in here? The idea of the pipeline isn't dead, it's just the route it takes. A new route will be proposed that doesn't travel through the contentious parts.

Keystone likely to creative 400 - 1200 jobs.
Give your head a shake if you think this is about jobs and the economy.

If the oil sands are going to go on without bottlenecking with the huge volumes that projects are bringing on in the next 15-20 years we will need all three of:
1) Keystone XL
2) Northern Gateway
and
3) Trans-mountain expansion
Unfortunately this isn't really an either/or, multiple ways to skin a cat game. The urgency is that at least one of them starts damn soon as we will start to see backups in 2015-2016.

What does Obama have to do with SOPA? White House is against the bill that has mostly GOP sponsorship in the house and Senate but whatever...

3 years + 2 months is not enough time.
While a Democrat is elected President, I dont believe this pipeline will be built.
Because I could care less about the US, from Canada's perspective the quicker we can bypass them the better. If they want to buy oil from Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Iraq instead of from Canada - so be it.

GOP put White House/State Department into a corner by attaching this decision to a payroll tax bill in December. GOP wanted to play politics and the President obliged.
