Hamptons was ok last night, spare the giant potholes, terrible corners and soft ice. But its open. There are better rinks in the NW in terms of condition right now though.

The problem with -20 is if you take a puck in the shin or off the foot, you're screwed.

Highwood has been going since late November - pick-up shinny on Thursday and Saturday evenings often with 2-3 suited goalies. New this year for the ice making crew is an ice edger which has made a huge difference along the boards. Lights on until at least 11 every night.

Highwood by SAIT? Might have to check that out. I'd like to test my horrible skills against something other than a crossbar.

I have a question for those of you that play outdoor shinny - do you play 5 on 5 with line changes, or is iteveryone on the ice?

In new Brighton it always seems to be 5 on 5 and I find it bizzare......

5 on 5 or 4 on 4. It's painful playing with like 20 people on the ice at once lol

But it can be fun for stick handling and footwork and just trying to pass and move the puck through all the players. More like pinball but still an enjoyable pace and everyone can be included. For a great workout 3 on 3 can't be beat on full ice. There are few places where this is possible but they do exist in the city. There are a few division 1 Pee Wee players where I go and I can only last about an hour with these kids. Very humbling

RE : New Brighton is that the caged in rink at Copperfield? I have seen it but never played there. It looks like a good set up.

we never exclude anybody or try to put people on the benches. it's a free for all most of the time.

I see alot of 5v5, but you always get the Gretzky, Ovechkin or Crosby that doesn't believe they need to take a shift. So you've got three guys that play the entire game and 2 guys that rotate. So it's a bit frustrating.

Generally I leave elsewhere if there is shifts going on. I go for a workout, and sitting half the game isn't a workout IMO.

Especially if it's cold!

How you guys can stand to be out there for long enough to shoot a puck at a net is beyond me. I couldn't even ski in this.

Yup, that is why I feel so blessed to have lived on McKenzie Lake growing up, and having a father who always wanted to make the biggest rink on the lake. Having a few of my or my brothers friends on that rink, playing 3 on 3 with posts for hours, really leaves you just soaking with sweat and about as happy as you can be.

^ Yeah, nothing really beats McKenzie Lake at all, the ice is pretty good besides a few cracks here and there. I've been out there a few times this year and I don't think there's been more than 5 or 6 people on each rink when I was there. It totally sucks when you shoot the puck wide at night though, haha

Has anyone stopped by Lake Minnewanka on the way to Banff this year? Wondering what it is like right now.

I am going for the first time this week tonight.......likely have to shovel before we can play though....it is about -18 right now...dress for it and should be fine. About 8-10 degrees off of perfect ice conditions.

Just wanna take a couple of people to skate around outside today around 4PM...does anybody know what outdoor rinks would be accessible and open today?

For example is Olympic Plaza open today cold enough to have ice since it's supposed to warm up today?

Thanks.

Totally agree. That's when you need to tell them to get off / take shorter shifts. Most people are reasonable and will apologize and stop being idiots.
