Must have some Mexican properties listed.

I still love Mexico. I avoid the really touristy areas though. The southern Pacific coast is the best. La Crucecita and Santa Cruz are both nice. Not too touristy, but enough so that you feel welcome. Most of the other tourists are from Argentina or other parts of Mexico it seems. They are also close to Zipolite, the largest nude beach in Latin America, or so I was told. You can rent huts right on the beach.

I've been to Cancun and it's like a different world than other parts of Mexico. I don't see why people go there. Good for the university crowd I guess.

Most of the drug violence is along the US-Mexico boarder. Most of your tourist spots are far away from that, it would be like saying don't go to Miami because Detroit is dangerous.

Entering Mexico
As of March 1st, 2010, all Canadian citizens need a valid passport to enter Mexico. Canadian citizens without a valid passport will not be allowed entry into Mexico and will be returned to Canada. In order to avoid delays and misunderstandings, we strongly recommend that you travel with a passport valid for six months after your arrival date.

Is this standard fare for travellers to the US as well?

Going to the US from Canada, from Government of Canada website....

Validity of Canadian passport
Although many countries require that a passport be valid at least six months beyond the duration of your stay, American authorities currently state that as a Canadian: "Your passport only needs to be valid for the duration of your planned trip to the U.S."

I've seen people prevented from boarding flights because their passport expires in less than 6 months. The rules are different for each country, but to be on the safe side it's generally best to renew your passport if it has less than 6 months left.

It varies country to country. For some countries, it's one month or three months. For others it's up to a year. Definitely check whenever you are planning a trip abroad - ideally, before you book anything.

I would guess that the 6 month number is because that is how long you can usually stay without a visa, but if you have return flights booked before the expiry date it shouldn't be a problem.
I'm not defending the government here (I think we should have 10-year passports) but it's the Mexican authorities who would bar entry.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The option of renewing it isn't available quite yet until I get my passport from safe keeping in Ottawa. And by that time there might not be enough time to get it in time for my flight. They're supposed to call me when they receive it and if there is time I'll definitely be renewing.

This is one reason it will be great when Canada finally goes to 10 year passports within the next year.

I have to say, I don't often compliment the federal government, but they've done a very good job of making the passport process a lot easier over the last decade.

I just checked my Park Plus account, and when I renewed my passport in December, I parked at Harry Hays at 1:35pm and ended my parking session at 1:53pm. Less than 18 minutes for the whole process. So much better than the 2+ hour wait it used to be. Plus, like I said, it was supposed to take 2 weeks, and I had my new passport in my hands in a week.

Actually Passport Canada IS coming out with a 10 year passport. It was supposed to come out in 2012 but like anything the gov't does.. its taking longer to impliment than expected. They are now saying it will be available in 2013. I'm told the cost will be about $200.

Isn't a 5 year passport around $75 or $80?

+1. I renewed mine a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how quick and easy it is now. They projected I wouldn't have it back before 5 weeks and it was in my mailbox in 2. Being able to now use any 2 people for a reference is fantastic too.

The violence has really spread everywhere now though, it generally doesn't involve tourists but the reality is Mexico is a country falling apart, if anything does happen to you there you might as well be in the Congo or the Sudan for all the help the authorities will be.

Make sure your passport is in good condition as I have heard of numerous people being refused due to water damaged or otherwise damaged passports.
