I actually think it could be used as a great tool if they were to simply tweet "checkstop in the SW tonight".
This would for sure discourage drunks from driving home.

I've always thought that there is a facinating debate about freedom of speech versus public safety and which should really have more weight.

It's true. In fact, the CPS would probably benefit from advertising things in a similar fashion.
"this public service announcement is here to remind you that there will be a checkstop located in NW Calgary this evening, January 10th 2012".
They wouldn't even need to even have one! Just reporting one in the NW might be enough to curb some drunk drivers.

Thats a whole other debate though. Personally, I'm getting sick of Public Safety being the tool used to curb charter granted liberties because its for the 'greater good.'
I've had enough of other people telling me whats good for me. Its arrogant and condescending. Who the hell do these people think they are making the rules and saying its 'for the best.'
But, thats a whole other argument.

Question for everyone, how many times have you actually been through a checkstop?
I myself in 10+ years of driving have only ever seen 2 in Calgary, and neither was with the bus.

One time for me a few years back.
Leaving Rally Pointe at about 10 at night. Had my son in the back.
Told the officer where I had been and where I was going and zoomed through in about 2 minutes...
That flashlight in the face/eyes is still annoying though....

My mom lives on a main route at a location that is 3 blocks away from a very common checkpoint location. If you come at her house from one way you need to turn around to be able to park properly, so whenever there is a checkstop running, and I would go to her house, I would get stopped by the officer checking for people trying to avoid the stop. Probably happened 4-5 times so far in the 10 + years she lived there.
Other than that, I have never been through a checkstop.

I've been through 1 check stop in the last 15 years and the bus wasn't there.
Basically he gave me the full flashlight to the eye while screaming "Have you been drinking"
Then I had to walk the road line while juggling bowling pins and singing the German National Anthem.

I believe I've been through 3. One in a cab on Crowchild by McMahon, one on Stoney Trail about a year ago on my way to the airport and another one on SB Crowchild right at the entrance to Crowfoot.
The 2 times I was driving I had been drinking (1 drink each time IIRC) and wasn't asked to blow.

I have been driving in Calgary for approx 15 years and have been through a checkstop 2 or 3 times... I did notice a number of abandoned vehicles before the checkstop once. Guess their rationale was its better to pick your car up from the impound than get a DUI

I've been through 3 as a driver and 2 as a passenger.
The one where I was a passenger was full-on ######ed. They took my buddy who was stone sober and driving, out of the car into the bus to blow and asked me to park the car. I was wasted and told the cop, in no uncertain terms, where he could shove those keys.
The words 'entrapping basterd' may have been uttered.

Or the drunks would feel more comfortable driving in the other areas of the city and it could actually make it worse.

More comfortable? Is anyone afraid of checkstops in the first place? Like most other people who've posted in the last 10 years I've been through them so incredibly infrequently. They are zero threat at present.
Although if I knew there would be one in my end of the city...I might think twice about having a few beers at the game tonight.

This is the reason I asked. Is the guy tweeting the locations really doing as much damage as people think? I really don't think that many people are looking to see where checkstops are when they drink and drive.

Tough thing to have an clear opinion on. But. . .
Quote:
An early morning collision at the intersection of Country Hills Blvd. and Shaganappi Tr. has claimed two lives.
The crash occurred just after 3:00 a.m. Sunday when a Toyota Yaris traveling along northbound Shaganappi Tr. collided with a westbound Mercedes sedan.
According to witnesses, the driver of the Yaris was speeding and drove through a red traffic light.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 20-year-old man, was killed.
The 20-year-old female passenger in the Yaris was pronounced dead on scene.
The driver of the Yaris, a 25-year-old woman, was transported to Foothills Hospital with minors injuries
Alcohol and speed are believed to have contributed to the crash.
Police continue to investigate. Charges are pending.
|
A dead 20 year old man and dead 25 year old woman. Makes me feel sick and there's got to be something better we can all do (society) to prevent this than what we (society) do now.

I don't mind it. I think of it the other way. If a guy is tweeting that maybe it will deter some people to drink and drive. He can't update every checkstop.
I get it the other way too though. It could cause some idiots to get hammered and not be scared.

I went through one a couple of weeks ago on Barlow, right before deeroot, beside the deerfoot casino. The weird thing was, the way the checkstop was setup, they could literally only catch people who were exiting off 114th, east bound AND heading to Deerfoot. Every other way people were coming from offered an easy exit strategy if you had been drinking. But I guess they probably get enough drunks from the casino to keep them busy.
