where is ortio right now?
So any updates on him? I was looking online but there doesn't seem to be much about what he is doing right now.
Is he in Abbotsford training with the Heat or back home in Finland playing there? Was just thinking with Irving in Calgary, is he going to get a few more games for the heat?

He's still with the Heat and dressing as the backup every game. They don't seem to want to give him much action. Hopefully he starts to get a couple games played soon. Would be nice to see where he is at in his development.

He's riding the pine in Abbotsford.
He last started a game on November 29, but has dressed for all but one Abbotsford game this year.

Is this just a case of using practices to get accustomed to the ice size or what?
I mean, you'd think he'd benefit more from starting lots in the ECHL, as opposed to riding the pine in the AHL no?

The only thing with that is the Grizzlies have pretty good goaltending as it is. I don't know what the rules are regarding sending players to other ECHL teams, but I'm not sure the Grizzlies would need/want him (if they even have a choice in the matter).

It's a long road for goalies to make the big show. I mean, even Irving was in the ECHL a couple of seasons ago. I think Ortio sees that Irving took all the steps in order, and he's had success. Joni is most likely prepared to do the same.

Got a chance to see Ortio play tonight. He went in after Taylor went in two REALLY soft goals. Not going to pretend I'm any kind of expert on goalie but I think he has a very strong glove hand. A grand rapids player had a chance to get off a bomb of a shot in the slot and he gloved it down easy. I also liked his ability to anticipate the play. He is also fairly proficient at handling the puck.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you on those points. It was the first time I didn't feel like "Oh crap, here come Ortio. The game's over now". He was confident and looked fairly good.

I've found it strange the way he never gets much playing time and still stays with the Heat. I guess they figure practising with the team and having a goalie coach on hand is better for his development, but still odd. I hope with this chance he can build on it as I was starting to lose faith that he would amount to much.

Taylor has been solid for the Heat for the most part, I still hope that Ortio gets a few starts soon though.

Goalies usually take a little longer than skaters. Irving is only seeing his first action in the NHL because Karlsson is hurt right now. Mind you, anything could have happened later this season that would warrant bringing him up as well. Ortio is only 20, he'll get his shot.

I do find it strange that he has dressed as the back up for so many games but has only seen action in just 1. Maybe the coaches know something we don't know about him, why not give him a chance, even just 1 or 2 games against teams at the bottom of the league, can't see that hurting the team too much.

Should have stayed with TPS trying to earn some starts and working on his game in a familiar environment. Hopefully there's a Finnish team willing to give him a chance next year, but I don't know how attractive a guy who never got to play in the AHL is going to be. Too many good goalies in Finland, but maybe TPS will have him back. A wasted year from that perspective too, because he's going to have to start from zero in Finland again.
From a top-3 goalie in the WJC to not playing at all.

Otio in net tonight with a great win. Opportunity is everyything. Coaches often make their minds up about players and that can destroy a young man's career.

Not wanting to hype Ortio up or anything, but his style reminds me a lot of Kiprusoff. He's calm, poised, and relies a lot on mobility. He seriously looks like he has the same competitive streak and cool head that Kipper does. Whether or not he has the skills to make the NHL is another question, but I think he already has the mindset of an NHL goalie.

Heat are reporting that Joni has been loaded/assinged to TPS Turku of SM-Liiga. There's no link on the story yet, but it is on their facebook page.

I would assume that means that Irving will be heading back down and that Karlsson is ready to return?

Ward also mentioned that Karlsson may come down to Abby for a conditioning stint.

From the Jatkoaika.fi discussion forum, apparently the current TPS backup is going somewhere else so I guess Ortio has a spot right away. Their goaltending hasn't been good this year, which makes me think that it's a real shame Joni went to NA when he could have been fighting for the starter position in Finland this year.
In any case it's great that they did this right away instead of waiting for next season. Gives Ortio time to show what he can do and secure a spot for 12-13 before TPS signs anyone else.
And back with his old goalie coach. The Flames organisation should be in no hurry with him.
