Again, the original quote made it sound like she bought a $12 million home just to bulldoze it.

Ha, if you guys think thats a crazy thing to do; you'd probably explode if you knew what Ty Warner did in Santa Barbara.

Same thing but with 3 or 4 houses worth 4-5x more EACH.

But it actually makes sense, as most of the value in a house is the property, not the building itself.

The cost of demolition and carting it all away is surprisingly low for a house. In some of the "to the stud renos" I've seen it might even be cheaper to start from a clean sheet and not work around existing limitations.

What's a new structure going to cost for her, $5 million? When you have $88M left? Peanuts.

If you think about it, she got a good deal on the place to start with... 12 milliion for that is not much when you compare it to Calgarys 12 million dollar home.

I bet that house is pretty dated.
Agreed.

Sitting next to an infill that is being built right now. Last year a 1911 house was sold for 600K. The place although looking nice outside, the inside was almost condemnable. Now a semi detached over $2 Mill is being built.

I am sure someone who is homeless in Calgary would have loved to live in the 1911 house. However, I didn't see anyone picketing or coming on CP to save that house?

My point is this stuff happens in Calgary, on a much smaller scale, all the time. Like you said, Land is king, not the house.

Lol yeah because a charity really has a use for a mansion. Maybe She should donate the millions of dollars it would take to run it as well. What's a charity going to do with it? especially when they'd have to find a new property to put it on and then renovate it to meet their needs.

Someone should photoshop an Alabama style mobile home on the property...

Complete with outdoor plumbing on the deck...

Just a really expensive tear down.
This one is being built near me in Vancouver. Valued at over a $37 Million, likely bought the old house for around $5 Million and tore it down.

A nice tranquil retreat to do yoga I suppose:

in calgary, there are tons of people and builders who spend upwards of $500,000 on a piece of land and tear the house down. this is not a new phenomenon of the wealthy.

I was just going to say - anyone who thinks this is crazy needs to go wander around inner-city neighborhoods like Altadore and Bankview. The monstrosities going in there are mind boggling. Don't get me started on Elboya...

There is absolutely nothing crazy about investing money into a property, especially at the levels that this woman is dealing with.

Lol yeah I already covered this puckluck.

I meant, not buy the house and give the $12 million cash to charity if she was going to just bulldoze the house.

It has since been pointed out that the property was worth $12 million, and the house much less. Just tearing it down to rebuild a new house.

Originally it sounded like she blew $12 million on a house just to bulldoze it.
Like I meant for her to donate a goddamned mansion to charity. Give your head a shake.

Well given what Tiger did that resulted in their split...we can be damn sure she was not that way in the bedroom. So as a result she'll always be a boring evil ice princess in my mind.
