Default "Illegal" to be fat - get fined or face higher premiums!

Looking forward to this coming to North America . . . all those damn fatties costing us in healthcare and airplane seat comfort!!

Is there a "half green" color that I can use for half joking? Considering the fact that more people on earth die from over eating now rather than malnuitrition/starvation boggles my mind. People have no self control!

If a person gets so obese they can't leave the house one should be able to set their house ablaze like Johnny Depp did in What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

33.5"+ inch waist for Japanese men is overweight?

It's interesting someone mentioned sumo wrestlers. Those guys are funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, and so the government is encouraging/paying these guys to break their own laws.

I just got back from Japan yesterday. The only fatties in Tokyo were the white tourists.

I love sushi, but I can never overeat when I head to a Japanese restaurant. I suppose if I ate like that everyday, I'd be skinny too.

I mean to say, Japanese food is very tasty, but it seems awfully filling too, even when you don't each much.

Wait - so it's just 33.5" no matter what your body type? I mean I know most Japanese dudes are smaller than elsewhere but that doesn't mean there isn't the occasional 6'2 guy. If that guy weighs 200 lbs and has 10% body fat and a 34" waist he is closer to ripped than fat. That's insane.

Oh dear, I hope you're kidding, or you at least you meant "in America".

Outlawing "being fat" has got to be one of the ultimate "first world problems".

I dread boarding an airplane these days...if I get stuck with a 'large' person I suffer the whole flight hunched forward in my seat.

I'm not a huge guy but I have broad shoulders and 'big' people and I do not fit in airplanes together

On a less selfish note, it's bad in general. Humans aren't designed to carry that much excess bulk.

I don't think that this type of sin tax is the best solution but it's a start

So me being 6'3" 200 with a 36" waist would be obese. Sure.

I guess being tall and not a toothpick means you're obese.

Other than that, it's good.

Maybe if the fast food companies stopped using high fructose corn syrup people would be less fat. (your body converts 70% of HFCS into fat, where natural sugars only get converted to fat at a 20% rate, so if you want to lose weight without changing much, just cut out the HFCS and you'll be on your way)

I have a real hard time believeing those numbers about HFCS.
Anything you have to back that up. I'm not calling you out or anything, it just sort of seems like that's kind of one of those internet things that gets repeated, but no one really knows where it came from.

The whole thing about x% of calories getting converted to fat is BS. Your body obeys the rules of thermodynamics. All excess calories you consume are converted to fat.

There is some evidence to suggest that HFCS encourages overeating because it produces the endorphin effects of eating sweet foods but does not produce the appettite supressing effects. The theory is that HFCS does not produce an insulin response like other sugars. The science on this is still up in the air though.
