define: Heroin Beer

I heard this term for the first time from a guy from out West today. I questioned him on it as I'm not framiliar with it. He gave me a definition and possible explinations for it.

So, I guess I'm asking people to define what it is (see if the definitions match up) and why they think it is what it is. I can't say I've ever noticed a difference.

I've always refered to Heroin Beer as the draft that they sell at the Saddledome. I've heard different explanations for it; some say it's the length of the lines, others say a different gas has to be used to pass the beer all the way through the Dome.

All I know is if I drove to the game I'll stick to canned beer, so I can be more sure of my ability to drive after.

Any other time I go out to a pub, for example, I always drink the draft.

Heroin beer is that which gets a person more drunk than they would normally be off the same amout of other beer.

Some possible explainations are: the length of the lines, the time which it stays in the lines before the next pour, (IE days between games) and someone once told me that it wasn't the beer at all, rather the stairs you have to climb up and down in the Dome to get the beer that cause you to get more intoxicated. It could also just be the atmoshpere....

Nope... Can't be the stairs... I've crank plenty of herion beer and sat in plenty of different seats at teh dome. Hell, ask FG... I was hammered when we went to the oiler game and there are NO stairs involved where he sits. Come to think of it, you dropped by and witnessed my inebriation.

There is HERION in hte beer.

Yes but you had about 15 of them, so heroin or no, you woulda been drunk.

But you merely dropped by during one of hte intermissions... Can't remember which one... How could you know that I had any more than 3?

Oh, and those empty cups under FG's chair were from that loud old man on the other side.

There si definately something up with the beer there. If i have 5 dome drafts, i am bombed. If i have 5 of those same cups with canned beer (about 7 im assuming volume wise) then its not even close to the same effect.

Not sure what it is.....heard its the nitrogen they put in the lines to move the beer, but not sure.

Would the nitrogen have a laughing gas effect like nitrous oxide?

I do recall just getting small beers and then just drinking only half because I always seem to get very inebriated at the dome with almost drinking nothing at all.

I tried this so-called "Heroin Beer" last night for the first time. I had one and had a major buzz. 2 and I would have been wrecked. Normal bottle of beer I could drink 3-4 and not even feel it. I'll never drink it again. I think, whatever they are doing to that beer, it has to be illegal.

well whatever they use for pusing the beer through the lines, its going to end up in the beer, simple chemistry

if it is just straight nitrogen, then you will get some oxide compound formed for sure............and it could be illegal.........but i tell ya, i aint complaining, i love the 'dome beer!

Okay a few myths to be dispelled about the dome beer.

1) it's the length of the lines they use.
-I know for a fact that the concessions in the nose bleeds each have their own kegs and the beer is not in fact pumped up from the basement. And it is unlikely that they would have kegs in the basement for a huge number of reasons, not the least of which being that fact that it would be a nightmare to have people in the basement setting up kegs when they run out. Has anyone ever seen someone from the concessions call down to the basement to get a keg changed? Didn't think so. Setting the kegs up in the basement makes no sense.

2) it's the nitrogen in the lines. Seriously, does anyone realise that the atmosphere is 79% nitrogen, so what little ammout would be in the beer would really have no effect on you. You guys remember the oxegynated water? Yeah, that was a bunch of bunk too.
Also toonmaster please explain to me the chemistry of getting an oxide compound from the addition of nitrogen. That just makes absolutely no sense.

Don't get me wrong guys, I've been the victim of the Heroin beer myself, but I'm more apt to think that it's more the atmosphere than the beer itself.

Then why am I fine when I stick to canned beer, but going loopy when I have draft? There have been days where I have 2 cans of beer, then somebody buys me a beer and it's draft, and that one knocks me off my feet. (And I'm a big guy; I can handle more than 3 beers.)

the beer definetely does some damage at the dome. If I have two or three I definetely feel it more than with regular (canned) beer, and yes I am factoring in the difference in size.

It's a weird thing. If I go in stone sober, the beer definetely does something. If I have been tailgating, and already had a six-pack for instance, the effect of dome beer is no different than if I were to keep drinking canned IMO.

What I've heard (from a former concession manager) is that the draught is injected with water and air (kind of like adding stuff to drugs or a more nerdy example adding fly-ash to concrete mixtures). The theory I've heard is that the air in the beer causes the alcohol to get into the blood quicker and easier.

It's weird thinking that a beer with lower alc. content (due to water and air) messes you up more,
