Yeah, I could see the Jays bidding something like 39M... IIRC the Sox outbid the #2 bid on Dice-K by about 16M or so. If your train of thought runs "everyone knows that the Sox overbid of Dice-K, so they'll bid more in line with what the 2nd place bid... we'll bid that plus a couple of million more" then 37-39M makes sense.

Makes sense but then how did all the news and rumours come out that the JAYS HAD WON if they were 10+ million behind?

This is a real head scratcher.

Bids are confidential, no one with the exception of Jays Management has any idea on the bid amount or even if they did in fact placed a bid.

Not surprised the Media types all have different perceptions on the total bid from the Jays....

AA will never confirm anything about the bid.

Beltran going to the Jays would have been a weird one. We have so many outfielders already. Glad that pipe dream is put to rest.

Jays still need a top end SP and another bat. Waiting patiently.

yeah and there was no way Beltran was going to play on fake grass with his lack of knees. Who's pipe dream was it?

Wrong choice of words. More just rumours of Beltran being of interest to the Jays, which is just a by product of the Jays doing their due diligence on everyone.

Not really a huge fan of baseball but I am digging the Blue Jays vintage style Logo. As for the Maimi Marlins logo.. Gross....

He'd be a great pick-up (solid #2 starter, proven AL East success)... not sure how much I'd be willing to give up for him in trade though. He's under team control for only two more years (and those years won't be cheap). I think I'd prefer AA to check in on Niese and Oswalt (If Oswalt is still open to a 1 year deal) before pulling the trigger on a Garza deal (Unless the asking price on Garza is less then rumored).

I'm thinking that trying to get a FA on a year or two deal may be a better option to go with how high the prices are getting on starting pitching. I'm not really thrilled with including 2 or 3 top prospects in any deals for the remaining starters that are available on the market. Unless there is a name that they are after that isn't out there, which is more likely given AA's history, I think it's best to try and see if they can get Oswalt or maybe even Edwin Jackson on a short term deal and see what they can do as the season and next off seasons progresses. I dont' want to see the Jays give up top prospects unless the return is truly worth it and IMO no one being rumored right now is.

I agree about not giving up top prospects for garza, good pitcher but he's only a little better than a rental. One story suggested Deck Mcguire and Anthony Gose for him which would be nuts. As painful as it may be, wait one season and sanchez, syndergaard, mcguire, hutchinson etc will be knocking on the door.

Wouldn't mind Edwin Jackson for 3 years or so, although I am enjoying Boras twisting in the wind an awful lot.

Meh, Scott Boras and middling talent strikes me as a dangerous combination as far as "talking to" goes... that guy (Boras) is waaaaaay to good at his job. I'm pretty sure as a pitcher in the midst of his prime Boras is looking for both dollars and term for Jackson and given that I don't regard Jackson as being much more then a good #3 I'd steer clear.

Oswalt is intriguing however. At his age I wouldn't give him more then 1 year (+ maybe a team option with a reasonable buyout) but if he pitches as good as he's capable and has no injury troubles he can be as good as anyone. And if he can do that then he could potentially be worth extending the qualifying offer that is now attached to free agent comp in the new CBA. Sadly, if I was a pitcher looking for a "show-me" deal to refresh my value I'd want to stay the hell away from Fenway, Yankee Stadium, and to a lesser extent the Skydome.

Darren Oliver anyone?

Quote:
According to two major league sources, Oliver is close to signing a deal with Toronto - the club that finished as runnerup to the Rangers in the Darvish sweepstakes. Oliver, 41, was the Rangers' top lefty reliever each of the last two seasons.

If they do indeed get Oliver I would actually argue the Jays bullpen would look pretty darn good.

Yes please. I'd sign him to a 1 year deal, really solidifies the bullpen for the season.

It's a one year plus team option contract according to the latest from MLBTR

Definitely a great signing. Now there's no need for Cecil to be put in the position of kind of being the only good LHP option in the pen.

Now the rotation and pen looks like this

Romero
Morrow
Alvarez
Cecil
Drabek/McGowan/other rookies

Long men - Villaneuava Litsch
Other pen guys - Perez, pretty much any other name I might be forgetting
Set up guys - Janssen Carreno Oliver
Closer - Santos

Not bad. Could probably use another 7th/8th inning reliever and a starter of some sort.
