Awesome pics. What a sweet looking bridge. It's things like that that make a city look good. Bit by bit, piece by piece, a cool city is a collection of cool landmarks and architecture. Rome wasn't built in a day, and while Calgary will never be Rome, at least we're taking a step in the right direction.

Yep. That's why comments along the lines of "We shouldn't spend money on a fancy bridge/building etc, because people won't come to Calgary to see it", are so silly. Well of course they won't come to see it, idiots, they'll come to Calgary more and more over the years, as our city matures and builds more things like this that adds to the overall look and vibe of the city.

Not much else to say that hasn't just been said, but yah... so cool.
Had to add more... what a cool addition to the city. Just stunning to see it lite up like that. Can't wait to see the pillars removed and see it finished, and walk across it.

Looks pretty good, but I just think those overhead windows are going to get so dirty... Who's going to keep those things clean?

Yeah, I know. They'd have to like, assign city workers to clean them every so often, or something drastic like that.

Maybe it won't be a big deal, but I'm willing to bet they'll just look dirty most of the time.

Not much in Calgary, especially downtown, looks dirty most of the time.

Love the bridge... I just wish there were snipers in the bushes to take out the punk kids that are going to tag it

Pop a fancy looking security camera on either end (fake or otherwise) and they'll limit this risk substantially.

I like the bridges simplicity. It isn't going overboard with a bunch of cables strung from projecting objects. I do think Sturgess is going overboard calling it a work of geinous. I have no doubt there are some politics at play in his letter to the editor.
The peace bridge has a big name attached to it but at the end of the day it's design is neither as good or as bad as most make it out to be. It is in the middle somewere.

I haven't weighed in much on this bridge but after reading through alot of this thread a few things rub me the wrong way. I find it interesting that people think getting Calatrava was some sort of progressive risk. The man designs bridges all over the world. You know exactly what you are getting into.
I total disagree with the comments about not having anyone local with the chops to pull something unique off. Just go to any school of architecture web page and see the wonderfully creative work that is being produced. That is before they enter the cut throught, mean, dirty business that is architecture.
There are literally hundreds of quality young architects in this province, the transition to "star" architect has alot more to do with positioning an politics than raw talent. I have seen some of the most talented people out there religated to drawing tile layouts for bathroom interiors, or picking cap flashing colors for the local big box.
Trust me, there is a ton of talent in this City, it is more the developers that have no vision or ambition. Any one that knows anything about the business of architecture understands this.
