Exclamation Update your Virus scanner tonite!!!!

The virus will eat all of your word, excel and other docs....

There's a virus which -if present- will start to corrupt documents tomorrow.

I advise you to make sure you have a virus scanner on your home computer(s) (especially if your kids or you are into downloading music, that it has the latest virus definitions and that you do complete virus scan today. If you don't have a virus scanner you can do a free on-line scan at: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

This is a lousy, unintelligent but very destructive virus. It doesn't aim for taking control of your PC without your knowledge. It just destroys information.
Thanks.

The virus

No this is real. People are panicing more than normal b/c this one will delete stuff that they've worked on. I don't know why or how but people will assume that they get hit with a virus that does something to their OS and renders their computer inoperable that all of their data is ok. Hence they don't panic so much when other virus' are announced.

This one they hear will delete their word, excel and pdf's and they panic b/c that is a lot of time that they've spent on those documents... they're important stuff to lose! I had so many panicing clients phoning in today b/c they were scared of losing their info. Yet, if/when our monthly newsletters contained warnings about other virus' they didn't care. It was a busy day for me today.

People often treat virus warnings much like your response, Hack&Lube. It's probably a scam. I don't blame them, there are so many scam's on the internet it is hard for the casual internet user and/or non-technical savvy to distinguish between the scams and actual warnings.

Here is a pdf from Trend Micro detailing this alert. You can find a link to it on their home page.

It spreads by fake e-mail messages and attachments. Frankly if you fall for it and open it, you deserve to be infected.

Symantec has a free tool to look for, and remove it if you have it....

Doomsday is nigh!

This isn't unlike any other mass worm release, it just happened to be one that gets lots of attention. There are some worms that don't get as much attention and wreak more havoc, but somehow slipped under the radar. This one is unique because it deletes your beloved files as opposed to ruining your OS. One isn't really any worse than the other, but it all in the way people view it.
