No this is real. People are panicing more than normal b/c this one will delete stuff that they've worked on. I don't know why or how but people will assume that they get hit with a virus that does something to their OS and renders their computer inoperable that all of their data is ok. Hence they don't panic so much when other virus' are announced.
This one they hear will delete their word, excel and pdf's and they panic b/c that is a lot of time that they've spent on those documents... they're important stuff to lose! I had so many panicing clients phoning in today b/c they were scared of losing their info. Yet, if/when our monthly newsletters contained warnings about other virus' they didn't care. It was a busy day for me today.
People often treat virus warnings much like your response, Hack&Lube. It's probably a scam. I don't blame them, there are so many scam's on the internet it is hard for the casual internet user and/or non-technical savvy to distinguish between the scams and actual warnings.
