smart people can dance, especially formal dancing that needs steps!
I may have unreasonable requirement but if a girl is bringing her husband/bf to her office party, she should expect one dance. If the guy can't dance then make it a slow dance, that's just hugging!

I will dance sometimes, but I am terrible at it and very self-conscious when I do. I absolutely hate it, but if the girl I am with is expecting me to, I will. Usually I say no and only do it if they are persistent.

I only dance when it's at the stage of the party where I can take my tie off.

But there must be something in life that you are uncomfortable doing that if you had to do it during a social event, would probably ruin your time.

Slow dancing I can get on board with.
Most guys (me specifically - and people in general) look ridiculous when dancing otherwise. We're perfectly rational people, why do we need to start flailing about on a dance floor?
I find zero enjoyment in it unless I am completely plastered - and then I have an Elaine Benes like reaction to finding out how terrible I looked. I can think of about 100000 other things I'd rather be doing.

They banned dancing in the small town I grew up in because it caused teen age promiscuity.

Unless you ram drunken wood into you're bosses wife's hip, or some female coworkers belly during the waltz.

That's not an acceptable social convention? Hmmm I have some apologies to make.

hmmm can't think of any.
A social event is pretty standard.
Meet and Greet in foyer (drinking)
Small talk with people at the same table.
Small talk during dinner/listen to presentations on stage.
More drinking
Dancing
I'm ok with most of these. I won't dance many songs but I guess it's easier for girl, we can dance in groups and go to the bathroom together.
My original observation was that there were guys who my co-workers brought that wouldn't dance or let their girl dance. I wanted her to join us in a fun group dance to something like Michael Jackson but she looked at him, shook her head and then they soon left. Seems like a waste of a night because she had taken the afternoon off to look all pretty

From a single mans perspective;
At a work function - no (unless it's helping me get laid)
At a wedding or other social event yes. I'm ridiculously uncoordinated but after a few it can be fun and the girls LOVE IT.

My theory on dancing is this:
If you can do it drunk, bouncers don't forcibly remove you from the dance floor, and your life goes on as normal, then what's the harm doing it sober? Surely you're at the very least, slightly better?
Secondly, if you're a bad dancer and you know it, why not have fun with it? No different from a self-depreciating joke. Know your flaw, own your flaw, draw attention to your flaw, and people will love you for it.

One time, down at the legion, I was drunk on gin and dancing with a lady friend, when she walked in. She told me to go home, but I had to remind her of my sworn love for fine distilled beverages and promiscuous women..

Wait what? Even if I'm not dancing, my wife can definitely dance with her friends.

There were just a couple of isolated incidents like this. Mostly the girls were dancing and their guys wouldn't join them which I surprised me a bit, thus the informal CP poll

That guy sounds like a dick.
If I'm ever at an event and the woman I'm with wants to dance I'd be more than happy to let her.
She enjoys dancing, I enjoy drinking. We can both do these things and meet up afterwards to continue mingling.

I have a much better shot at getting laid if I stay as far away from the dance floor as possible.

what about with other guys?
for example it's the girl's staff party, she may want to dance with a few of her guy co-workers.
