Default Prince George is Canada's Most Dangerous City

According to Maclean's. Calgary is ranked 50th (3rd safest in Alberta, behind only Sherwood park and St. Albert). Victoria is ranked 2nd, Winnipeg 9th, Vancouver 18th, Edmonton 19th, Montreal 22nd, Toronto 52nd and Ottawa 74th.

Quote:
Prince George was cited for its gang wars, its drug problems and for being home to Cody Alan Legebokoff, a 21-year-old who police allege has murdered at least three women and a 15-year-old girl.

Victoria, meanwhile, was shown to have particularly high rates of robbery and sexual assault in comparison to the rest of the country.

The rankings were derived by assessing crime data from Statistics Canada from 2010, looking specifically at homicides, sexual assaults, aggravated assaults, robberies, vehicle thefts and break-and-enters.

Saskatchewan's two biggest cities were also among the country's most dangerous cities, according to the rankings, with Saskatoon placing third and Regina fifth. Red Deer, Alta., was fourth.

I was surprised to see Victoria ranked so high. I have never been there, but I thought it had a reputation of being a nice city without much crime. I was also surprised to see Peterborough ranked so high and Gatineau so low. I have been to both many times and found Peterborough to be very nice and Gatineau is a hole for the most part (at least downtown).

I lived in PG for 4 years and moved just a year ago.

What a dump. Unless you're asking for trouble, no one goes downtown after dark.

Victoria is prob a victim of the best winter weather in Canada. When i lived there is was loaded with street kids - that might play a part.

Lived in Victoria for 5 years. It's overrun with drug addicts. The mild climate and bohemian culture results in every heroin and meth head in the country trying to set up camp, litterally. There is a huge tent city of drug addicts by the train tracks just outside of downtown.

Combine this with a large student population with a strong female majority, and that's where the sexual assaults come into play. The campus is surrounded by woods. So it was easy for perverts to come in, assault young women, and then retreat into the woods.

Having spent a lot of time in Prince George the past 23 years, I can't say I'm surprised. The place is a dump, and between the economy and everything else tanking in the town, its just a desolate hole.

A view from a long time PG advocate:

And no suprise to me...I've spent time in PG for almost 20 years and I think it's fallen a lot in that time.

I find it weird that Saskatoon is third and London is 30th... just as the last 2 cities I've lived in, I feel much safer in downtown Saskatoon than I did in downtown London. I guess the violent crime in the core neighbourhoods in Saskatoon is just so high that it gets put in such a high spot.

Weak. Stereotype much? I've lived in Edmonton and area for over five decades and there has been only one time I've ever felt threatened in any way. Edmonton is fine - get over it. I've spent much less time in Montreal and Vancouver and have as many incidents in those places as here.

Calgary really is a different place than other cities in the interior Western part of the country.

I survived 5 years in Prince George, and it's deteriorated badly since I bolted 10 years ago. The men's Rec Hockey league was like the Federal league, every team had 2 or 3 classic goons, and there was one team of nothing but goons.

Than there was down town where walking three blocks was always an adventure at night.

No wonder I felt perfectly safe wandering the streets in Brazil while all the Europeans were leery to walk about after dark. I lived in a worse place!

St.Albert is certainly a world different. I fear photo radar tickets and thats about it.

Being from Victoria I can assure you that we get a bad rap from those #######s from Burnaby.

Easy solution, dont go to school and stay away from the woods. Back to the kitchen!
