"Just as the winter season is a time when major religions to trumpet their beliefs, it is also a time when atheists spend extra energy pushing back against the influence of religion in public life, especially in government."
"In Leesburg, Va., an atheist display depicting a skeleton in a Santa suit nailed to a cross caused a ruckus. The nonprofit American Atheists is putting up seasonal billboards calling for atheists to go public with their beliefs." (emphasis mine)
I get a kick out of anyone who claims their religion provides them a "moral" core when it advocates bigotry against homosexuals and women.
So I'm not surprised they don't think much of atheists either.
I haven't read the bible ....but does it really "advocate" bigotry against homosexuality?...maybe Calgaryborn can fill us in??
From my own day to day observations, I find religious families (not necessarily christian) seem to have a better overall morale and cohesiveness, better family life, their kids tend not to get caught up in drugs, and they're generally more respectful/polite toward others. Aside from crazy Fred Phelps I don't see christians going around hating on homo's....
I am not a member of any organized religion, but not an atheist either.
Atheists have become more organized over the last decade, and as a result have become almost as annoying as feminists.
(emphasis mine)
Do you find feminists more or less annoying than religious nuts? If less, then would you place the religious nuts above or below the atheists. Finally - who annoys you more than feminists if not atheists or nuts.
Just trying to establish a hierarchy.
(it does seem odd you would dislike the feminists more than either party to this thread... and odder still you'd bring it up in this thread).

Hierarchy?
Feminists/Liberals
Organized atheists
AGW alarmists
Religious nuts
Something like that...

Really guys.....?
Guys?
Didn't you know that skeleton santas are a mandatory part of celebrations in the book that atheist are mandated to follow.
Wait, there's no mandated actions all atheists must follow? You mean people are free to act as they please and some are jerks? Huh...
If you can criticize all atheists because of skeleton Santa, I can criticize all theists because of the actions of Westbro or church supported Catholic priest pedophiles right?
(Hint, it doesn't work that way, in either direction)

Depends on one's interpretation of scripture. The OT advocates killing of homosexuals, but different Christian sects have different views of how much stock should be placed in OT instructions and views.
Most Christian sects view Romans 1:26-27 as promoting a complete prohibition against homosexuality, though others interpret it in a broader context, or cite Paul's apparent fallibility in other areas, or put the standard in a social context (like long hair or women covering their heads) as applying to that time but not to this time, concluding that homosexuality isn't advocated against in the Bible.

That is an interesting article, but I wonder if they considered other factors like the percentage of the group that is married.
I also know people who left their religion at the same time as their divorce. I am pretty sure that is the fault of the atheist partner not the upstanding christian that was tricked into the marriage.
You mean their largely anti-male attitudes, support for sexist legislation, etc.?
Modern feminism is hardly about what the original spirit of the movement was (that is, equality), similar to how MADD went from being about reducing drunk driving to being neo-prohibitionist. Women's suffrage was a massive achievement and something that was absolutely needed for us to move forward as a society. I'm down with equality. But today's feminists are not about equality, the goal is to secure for women a place in society with special privileges. They're like any other special interest group. We want what we want and screw everyone else. That's where I take issue with it.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled debate.

I think Photon's response about lumping all atheists and all theists together applies to this as well, you're painting with a mighty large brush here.

"But some scholars and family activists are questioning the oft-cited statistics, saying Christians who attend church regularly are more likely to remain wed.
"It's a useful myth," said Bradley Wright, a University of Connecticut sociologist.."
"Wright combed through the General Social Survey, a vast demographic study conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, and found that Christians, like adherents of other religions, have a divorce rate of about 42%. The rate among religiously unaffiliated Americans is 50%.
When Wright examined the statistics on evangelicals, he found worship attendance has a big influence on the numbers. Six in 10 evangelicals who never attend had been divorced or separated, compared to just 38% of weekly attendees."
"David Kinnaman, Barna's president, said the statistical differences reflect varied approaches, with Wright looking more at attendance and his research firm dwelling on theological commitments."
There are many factors at play (economics, marriage rates, age etc.) but I'll stand by my observation that on average, families that actually attend church instead of identifying themselves as christian without participating have lower divorce rates.

I'm providing commentary specifically on the organised movement. The ideals. Same as we say that Occupy Calgary is a misinformed movement with shoddy arguments and ridiculous demands.
I will concede that I hit submit too quickly with the first sentence and should have provided more clarity - not all feminists display those attributes. But the movement as a collective certainly seems to. I can't speak to the individual, because each person might agree and disagree with various aspects of feminism.
