My first year physics professor had the most brutal exam I've written. 30 multiple choice questions. I got 30% and it is the only thing I have failed (though still passed the course). No exam involving math should ever be completely multiple choice in my opinion.
The lectures were ridiculously hilarious, they basically consisted of him throwing liquid nitrogen around the lecture hall and finding some way to relate it to physics. He was very Russian, hard to understand, his notes consisted of him drawing #### with almost no explanation. His teaching skills were completely abysmal but his lectures were fun to go to.
One hilarious remark he made was after somebody got zero on the (12 question, all multiple choice) midterm was that "this is zee statistical improbably. Zee monkey with zee pencil should get 20%. You must know something about zee pheezeeks to get zero!"

Failing one course is not a big issue by itself unless it is an indicator of a greater problem.
If it is, then better to find out early before you waste too much money.

It's not the end of the world. Why did you fail? Did you put the work in and just couldn't do it? Or did you slack?

Some people just don't test well. If you feel like you understand the material and can do well and put the work in, then failing the course isn't necessarily a bad thing. Maybe you'll get through it the second time with a much better grade.
Sometimes when writing the test a second time you're less anxious or whatever because you are more comfortable with the material. That comfort level with writing exams will come the further you get into University. Do you typically have test anxiety? Have you fared pretty well in exam situations in the past?
You probably did better than you think.

I recently wrote an exam that I was prepped for, then once I sat in the room I balked at recalling much of anything that I had been working at repetitively. Sometimes we just get those brain farts and can only hope that it doesn't ruin anything. I have since emailed my prof explaining what happened and saying that I would be able to go through the course in detail normally, but just had a bad exam.
Working on 50% finals with mandatory passes in upper year engineering and am cutting it close with this error

You need to have done Calc in high school and gotten at least 65% in it to get into Math 251. I'm in 249 and things aren't looking good for my exam on friday... All the quizzes/tests in my class are short answer, and I've discovered I do better when I just focus on doing steps rather than trying to get an answer because you'll get about 70% if you do all the work but get the wrong answer which is stupid IMO.

Multiple choice is a lot better for me in my economics class and the business class I had, but I'm glad I have short answer for my calculus because I don't understand any of it.

I remember when I took Math 251 (5 years ago now) I was sure that I had failed and I was even re-arranging my schedule in the Winter semester to try and fit it in as I was certain I would be repeating it. Most people in my class felt the same way. When the grades came back I got in the high 70's with the class average being around 73-75. I'm fairly certain the grades were curved. Don't worry too much.
In the case that you do have to re-take the course, it's not a huge deal, the worst part being that you have to pay for the course again. I would make sure to do it again as soon as possible though. I'm not sure what faculty you're in, but the rules in Haskayne (where I am) are that you can repeat any course ONCE, you must pass it on the second time around though or you get kicked out of the faculty.

Hey Cheerio, you mentioned you were in 249, did you have V. Stastna as your prof?
I'm going into the final needing an 80 to pass the course on my own........ I was marked ridiculously hard on all the quizzes by my TA, and I am paying for it........
(I am seriously hoping the rumours of grade curving are true....)

Not a big deal. I have some F's and W's in my first couple semesters and I still got into law school. I pulled up my socks big time after that but it's definitely not the end of the world.
