I thought that The Departed was massively overrated.

Flame away. Be sure to include the fact that I didn't like The Wire either.

I'll watch anything David Simon attaches his name to. The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Street, Generation Kill, etc.

Which means I'm adding Treme to the underrated list. As with The Wire, it takes quite a few episodes to develop the characters, but it's very well done.

The Sling Blade wins this thread. Easily one of the best movies of the last 20 years and I've hardly met a person that knows of it, let alone has seen it.

Speaking of underratted.. criminally underrated comedies... Best in Show is one of the funniest movies ever.

It was on when I woke up Sunday morning, I had some running around to do, but I just plopped on the couch and watch it. What a great movie.

All Fred Willard has to do is open his mouth and I crack up.
Good call. Waiting for Guffmann and A Mighty Wind were also very good, I thought. But every single line Fred Willard had in Best in Show was freaking gold. "How much do you think I can bench press?"

That's probably just the LSD being released from your fat cells because you're bent over working on the lawnmower.

I liked everything about the Departed except for Nicholson and DeCaprio, unfortunatly that is pretty much the movie, the shame is everyone else in it, particularly Ray Winstone were outstanding, the story was good, the script was fine.

Underrated TV: The Wire
I haven't finished the series yet, but everything I have seen so far has been amazing. The show has been mentioned lots in this thread so I won't go into it too much, but one thing (of many) that the show does really well is the politics within the police force. Very believable. As a comparison I just started watching the sixth season of Dexter, and while it's a decent show, the politics in it look childish compared to The Wire. While it's got lots of praise in this thread I think it's underrated because most of the people I talk to haven't even heard of the show, let alone seen it.

Overrated / Underrated TV: The Walking Dead
Underrated because two episodes of this season were absolutely fantastic. Overrated because this seasons had seven episodes.

Underrated Movie: A Serious Man
If you are not a fan of the Cohen brothers then you won't like this movie, but for everyone else, especially fans of the brothers this is a really good movie. Not their best work, but more people should have seen this one.

Overrated Movie: Taken
Perhaps this was over hyped for me, but I didn't see what all the hype was about. The thing that bothered me the most was that Liam's character purports to be a CIA spy who is an expert infiltrator that is very sneaky and smart. Yet he spends a large amount of time barging into rooms and ducking under bullets. Didn't seem how an infiltrator would go about things considering you would have life expectancy of about two and a half missions before a stray bullet painted your brain on a wall. But maybe I need to give this one another viewing since there is so much love for it on here.

It has nothing to do with "getting the movie", the ending was just abrupt and had no conclusion.

Little bit older (1981) than many of the movies mentioned so far but, I always thought Eye of the Needle with Donald Sutherland and Kate Nelligan was a great movie that flew well under the radar.

I feel like Nacho Libre is a movie that doesn't get brought up much. It is absolutely hilarious and is Jack Black's best IMO.

High Fidelity should get more love. Fantastic movie with a great sound track. Also think it is one of Jack Black's best. ( I know supporting role but still great).

Good calls on Sling Blade and High Fidelity.

"..sure liked dem taters though mmhmm."

Slumdog - Was verrrry underrated before it generated Oscar buzz. It passed through calgary theaters twice.
The directing of photography was incredible. The colours that were highlighted in those slums were as vibrant is anything i've ever seen. BUT, I found it to be overrated because the classic hollywood romantic ending was horrible and ruined an otherwise strong film. Overrated!!

Hot Fuzz might be one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, but doesn't get a ton of love.

Underrated: Swingers - Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau were brilliant.

[playing a hockey video game]
Trent: I wish they still had fights in this game so I could bitch-slap Wayne.
Mike: What? They don't have fighting anymore?
Trent: Doesn't that suck?
Mike: Why'd they get rid of the fighting? It was the best part of the old version.
Sue: I think kids were hittin' each other or somethin', man.
Trent: Yeah but you know what, Mike? You can make their heads bleed in this one.
Mike: Make somebody's head bleed.
Sue: No man, we're in the playoffs.

Mr. Show was a criminally underrated comedy series.

Some of my favourites.

Pre-taped called in show:
