You know what else? When her or any of her family come to Canada no one even bothers to turn up - what a waste of money!

what the $7.5M will (in part) go towards.

- 60,000 Diamond Jubilee medals, which will be awarded to civic-minded Canadians throughout 2012....meant to “acknowledge those unsung heroes from all walks of life who support and contribute to their communities

- $750,000 to provide “modest support” for community-based initiatives intended to commemorate the Queen’s 60th year on the throne.

- A series of national, regional and local events, still to be detailed, will be held during the week of Feb. 6, 2012, as part of an official “Diamond Jubilee Week”

- A major education effort is also planned, with the revising and re-publication of A Crown of Maples, the signature federal booklet on the history and contemporary role of the monarchy in Canada’s system of government.

- Commemorative coins and stamps, as well as teaching materials linked the 60th anniversary, will also be made available across the country, all part of the government’s plan “to increase awareness about this national milestone and encourage Canadians to actively celebrate it in ways that are most meaningful to them.”

Sounds rather modest and restrained, with money going to recognize Canadians and support community celebrations and education. Much ado about nothing

Doesn't Calgary spend more on C-Train warning lights, bells, and barriers that nobody pays attention to anyhow?

About abolishing the monarchy: What a lot of people don't get is that if you do that there has to be somebody who does the duties of that office. In most democracies that are not constitutional monarchies there is an official either appointed or elected that doesn't have a lot of power, but does a lot of the ceremonial roles that the Queen or Governor General/Lieutenant-Governor do. Electing such an official would cost a lot more than we pay for the GG/monarchy now IMO.

If we trace you're geneology back far enough members of you're family probably committed an atrocity, or a crime of some kind.

I demand reparations for my people.

Funny I thought the celebration was about her achievements, and not about the actions of her predecessors.

So, if my family became wealthy from Nazi gold, do you think that I should have to give that up despite not being involved in the Holocaust myself?

People need to relax over the "old-hag" name calling. She is not better than us, and we are not her slaves.

Not going to disagree, but if you checked out the crowds when William and Kate were here and when the Queen comes, you might say they is some kind of purpose there.

The Irish Potato Famine? Where the British monarch blocked aid to Ireland and forced thousands to die of malnutrition? This stuff is common knowledge.

The Queen may be a nice lady, but it's the whole insititution in general that I resent.

Plus, all of contracts, titles, laws, agreements, treaties, Parliamentary Acts, etc currently between the Crown and XYZ would need to be accounted for.

It would definitely lead to some very complicated legal issues with respect to the Crown's relationship with First Nations peoples in Canada. The legal bill sorting those issues out alone would make 7.5 million dollars look like peanuts.

Well, for better or for worse, if it wasn't for our mammalian Queen signing a bunch of (pretty unfair) treaties with the the indigenous peoples here in what we now call Canada, you and I would be probably sweeping chimneys in Manchester somewhere right now.

$7.5 million? You could build 30% of a pedestrian bridge with that money!

I bet if we go back far enough we can say that about the ancestors of lots of people who did great things in their lifetimes

Who cares about the royals. They are scum. Many members of the royal family were Nazi sympathizers. They also invited a swath of dictators to the recent royal wedding. How nice....

In the foreword to his 1986 book If I Were an Animal, Prince Philip wrote,

“In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, in order to contribute something to solve overpopulation.”

Oh thanks Philip, well maybe you could start by offing yourself.

Actually, Philip has a bunch of hilarious (but mean) quotes.

...and here is Prince Philip marching with Nazi's.

So yeah ....I don't wish to be associated in any way with Nazi eugenicists.
