I think there are tens of millions of dollars in Federal grants to local and national festivals and cultural events in any given year.

While I'm not a huge fan of Royalty in general, this is not necessarily an unusual expenditure and probably would fit the criteria.

Just saying.

I'm not pro-Monarchy by any means, but I understand it has its place.

Whether shes a Queen or anyone else though, someone with the life and experiences of Queen Elizabeth should never be called an 'Old Hag' and I'd suggest that you should re-name the thread title.

the royal family serves absolutely no purpose and are a tax drain wherever they go (i'm sure British taxpayers loved spending 70 million dollars on the royal wedding). they need to just go away

i am quite anti monarchy, i think its a farce and a waste of money. however, calling her (or anyone you dont personally know) an old hag is just rude.

do you know her? why would you call anyone such a thing without provocation?

i also dont appreciate the government spending MILLIONS on a celebration, for anyone. how about putting that money into grass roots items like the food banks, homeless shelters and other areas that our citizens can actually benefit from.

seriously, the things we waste money on is incredible.

Because I think that Queen Elizabeth, despite being widely regarded as a tax drain and superfluous to requirments, has earned some respect through her life.

The Royal Family is part of our heritage as a nation and they do tend to do a lot of good relative to what they "have" to do. The two princes are in the armed forces, one having fought in Afghanistan, the other being involved in search and rescue. The amount of charity work that they tend to do is extraordinary and that includes Charles and the Princes Trust. Hell go back in time and you would find Princess Elizabeth refusing to be evacuated and volunteering in the war effort in WWII.

I don't know if the cost of the royal wedding was worth it - but I don't recall much complaint about it... Also calling someone an old hag is in poor taste, particularly one with as many life achievements as the Queen.

I agree.

I think it's time to let it go. I doubt that the small amount of tourism that we get from having this "cultural" aspect makes up for the money we waste on it and the negative imapct it has on national unity.

Not to mention, the British Royal Family has been involved in some pretty brutal things in the past. It's not really something to take pride in associating with.
