Default "Mythbusters" Cannonball Stunt Goes Wrong, Neighbourhood Assaulted

Story

Quote:
a cannonball on a bomb disposal range in Dublin, Calif.,... was supposed to hit some rather large trash cans filled with water before piercing a wall.... it missed the trash cans, tore through a cinder-block wall, bounced its merry way down a hillside, barreled 700 yards through a suburban California neighborhood, smashed through the front door of a house, bounced up the stairs of the house and, without knocking, penetrated a bedroom door where a man, woman, and child were sleeping... bounced its way out through the wall of the house, crossed a road, smashed a few tiles that were carelessly lying around on the roof of another house and finally took a seat inside the Gill family's Toyota Sienna
Next up for testing: The myth of the forgiving production insurance company

Well that's what those people get for living in urban sprawl near a bomb disposal range...

Seems unlikely that a cannonball could go through a wall, fly(?)/roll for two miles, bounce up a flight of stairs (as opposed to just crashing through?) and still have enough energy to go through another wall. Can't imagine anyone on Mythbusters or the Sherrif's office ever expected something like that could happen.

Can't wait to see this episode!

Also, reading that article, all I could think of was how big a d-bag the author is.

Agreed with Resolute, the physics of the whole thing just don't seem possible.

I fully expect this was from their "big explosions and impossible situations" part of the episode. Under normal circumstances, that doesn't seem too plausible. In likely situations, you'd need to have it launched from a decent distance above two flights of stairs (even higher when considering the momentum loss of hitting the ground).

Given that they've been doing this show for the better part of a decade, it's actually a pretty good track record that this is the first time something like this has happened.

I find myself thinking during some episodes "you know, their going to eventually have a fatality on there hands."

My thoughts exactly. I was wondering if the Mythbusters used his puppy in an experiment or slept with his wife. He seems to have an unhealthy loathing of them.

They had cameras in the house with the sleeping family. Book it.

Oh, I have no doubt at all that it did happen. Only that I imagine everyone's jaw hit the pavement as they watched a cannonball launch into a neighbourhood.

Everyone should flood their website with "Betcha can't do that again!" requests. And I'd put even money down that they couldn't do it again...

100 years from now somebody will be testing the myth of the cannon ball that bounced two miles, through a house, up the stairs and into a parked car.

"No way would a cannonball have that much force!..."

I fully expect to see it on Mythbuster's 110th season.

According to your story, Hernandez passes you and starts walking up the ramp. Then you say you were struck on the right temple. The spit then proceeds to ricochet off the temple, striking Newman between the third and fourth rib. The spit then came off the rib turned and hit Newman in the right wrist, causing him to drop his baseball cap. The spit then splashed off the wrist, pauses — in mid air, mind you — makes a left turn and lands on Newman's left thigh. That is one magic loogie.

The TV anchor from that news clip looks like he uses a lot of Botox

Perhaps they should use that to stop the next cannonball.
