Interesting. I think supports a potential play for a big fish
Interesting article.... following line is always worth noting when reading rumours involving the Jays

“From a media and fan standpoint, if it’s leaked it’s probably inaccurate. How many of our deals that came out in the press first have been accurate — 1%?”

We were in such a different place as an organization,” Anthopoulos explained. “Coming into the meetings, I didn’t know what 2011 was going to hold. I felt if we were going to make a trade it would have to be something that wasn’t going to hurt us long term. ...
“There were so many question marks and uncertainties that could have gone the other way. Both (Aaron) Hill and (Adam) Lind could have not played well. (J.P.) Arencibia could have failed. Our whole rotation could have crumbled. Vernon (Wells) was still here, if he had reverted back. (Jose) Bautista wasn’t signed. I don’t think anyone in our group could say with certainty what was going to happen with those players. We needed to find out and we needed to make as many short-term moves as we could that would allow us the flexibility to go either way and react to what happened during the year.”

Tough to argue with that. There were a lot of questions about the on field team that the Jays were going to have at that point in time. Even Bautista, was still highly questionable as a one year wonder. Today you can be a lot more convinced in saying Bautista is a high end slugger. You have more info to tell you what you have in guys like Romero and Morrow, and how you need to fill out the rest of the rotation.

Maybe they make a play for a slugger, maybe they don't. But if you can't add all the pieces this offseason...why would you be able to add them all next off season. It likely is going to be a process that takes some time. Although...I do think you can always trade good pitching prospects for good more major league hitting ones without too much trouble.

The Tigers, Blue Jays, and Padres inquired on Mets infielder Daniel Murphy, tweets Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Sherman adds that the Mets like the Tigers' Andy Dirks as a potential center field alternative to Angel Pagan.
Murphy, 26, hit .320/.362/.448 in 423 plate appearances while playing first base, second base, and third base this year.

The Jays have apparently won the bidding process for Japanese SS Hiroyuki Nakajima.

Kelly Johnson, I believe, has until today sometime to make up his mind on arbitration. If he takes that for this year the Jays said they will talk longer term contract.

I bet he accepts and returns to the Jays for 1 more year.

I watched Brunt and what's his face blabbing about it last night. Apparently they think you are correct. He hasn't been getting many good offers or so they say. Meanwhile Jays just seem to be gaga about the guy.

They pointed out that he didn't exactly stand out last year but hey he is likely their best solution.

I seriously hope not. Picks are more important then ever, and losing 2 for him seems like a negative even if we're stuck with Valbuena or that japanese guy I mentioned above.

I may be misunderstanding what you are saying, but why would we lose 2 picks if Johnson were to accept aribitration?

If he accepts Jays would not lose any picks. If he declines and signs with another team Jays would gain picks.

I'm with Brunt and Co. on the Kelly Johnson issue. I'm not a fan of his, but the Jays really don't have much of a choice than to ink him considering there isn't many 2B out there to grab. AA would have to work his trade magic, but I can't see an elite 2B who wouldn't come at an excessive cost, so he's better off sticking with Johnson who then becomes the fall guy in the lineup.

Jays have apparently traded Nestor Molina for Sergio Santos

Details to come.

If that's it, that blows.

Jebus - that isn't great... If you are targeting potential closers via trade - Sergio Santos would not be my first choice. Electric arm, reasonably young, and saved 30 of 36 opps. All not bad - considering he was a ss not too long ago.

Wait... we are still searching for a 2B aren't we? Hmmmm

This doesn't make much sense to me at all. While it's good that we now have a closer that's relatively cheap, that's a hefty price to pay.

Jays will have their 2B when he accepts the arbritration on Wednesday night.

Not sure what to think of the trade.... Molina has a great arm.

Actually this is a pretty good trade after the initial shock of it.

We have a decent closer for the next three years at a combined cost of 8.25 (less than 3 per) instead of spending 8-9 mil to get someone like Madson.

Also, Molina only throws at 91 MPH so unless he has great command, at best he's going to be a back of the rotation guy.

That also frees us up to spend the 6 or so mil savings elsewhere.
