I think Be A GM is noticeably improved.
It's still not wonderful, but some serious improvements have been made.

The other day Calgary offered me their 1st rounder this year, and a 3rd rounder next year for Ben freaking Eager. I gladly accepted, and then somehow the computer decided to send RNH back to major junior. I hadn't saved yet, so I had to quit without saving. Today, the same trade was offered, but this time I declined, and then went to make sure I had enough players on my roster that a move to junior wouldn't happen. I called a guy up, and then went myself and offered Calgary the exact same deal, only for it to basically call me an idiot for trying such a lopsided trade. WTF!?

Would you be willing to elaborate for me? From what I understand, it is still the basic framework from NHL 11, with gametracker being the only new feature.
Some people say the gameplay (AI) is better, and others say it isn't. When I played the demo back August/September, I felt the AI was pretty much the same as last year. Immensely frustrating.

I feel like the trade logic is a bit better, the new active simming is, for me, a very nice feature.
I haven't played far into my GM mode yet, but I'm enjoying it so far.

Trading is a little better...but you'll still get outrageously stacked trades in your favour. Especially at deadlines.
Even worse is the off-season signings...Semin is still a UFA 5 months into my next season

be a gm is extremely boring for me.
unless you play all your games, you'll spend most of your time ensuring you have adequate lines as players are being injured every week. You can't rely on the auto-assistant coach, cus that dude's crazy. The CPU assist will put forwards on D, D on forwards, just stupid.
yesterday i started a new Be a GM as i'm very bored with the real life flames, so tried to sim to the offseason.
- i had a lot of rookies in the top 6, iginla/tangua on 3rd line, bouwmeester/giordano on 3rd pairing with brodie/smith on top pairing, and karlsson starting, and i still snuck into the playoffs, argh!
- before starting i editted all the 2012 1st round draft predictees and upped their potentials, and though i did get a player in the first round around the spot central scouting has them today, i also got another player predicted to be a 1st rounder, whom i updated their potential for, in the 3rd or 4th round
- i traded kipper and a mid round pick to colorado for stastny
- signed jay mclement, and some other 3rd/4th liners in paille, konopka
- am playing baertchi on the top line wtih stastny and iginla
however, as i said before, if you're a 'simmer' the mode is extremely boring as all you do between the draft, re-sign week, first few days of free agency, and the trade deadline is:
- update your scouts (which is a 5s activity)
- update your ahl/nhl lines due to injuries for about 75% of the simming time during the season

Just trade for all the NHL current up and comers...the formula is out of whack and they all exceed Crosby in skill by the 3rd or 4th year.

I think I will have to do that, what kind of trade does it take to get a guy like Larsson or Hopkins

*edit* i am using a fairly early roster release for when i started my gm mode. i have since noticed that several major prospects (RNH, Larsson, Couterier, etc) have had their ratings edited. because of that, my list isn't accurate for most people. i marked them with asterisks. /edit
this is going to show the super nerdy OCD side of me, but i actually have a spreadsheet of anyone that starts out with a B or better potential. what i did is measure the length of the value bar. the numbers themselves are arbitrary (they represent the length of the bar in millimeters on my 60" screen), but it can give you an idea of how they stack up against each other. personally, i think RNH is a steal because even though he only has B potential, he starts out at 77 and has a relatively low value. the list is formatted poorly but its sorted by value from large to small.
to directly answer your question, RNH didn't take much for me. i traded a slightly decent prospect, a crap prospect (had to clear a contract) a 2nd, and 2 6ths. i felt like it was a pretty awesome swap. didn't have to give up a first if i didn't want to. and the guy i gave up was nowhere near as good as RNH. larsson i had a bit more trouble with. perhaps it was just because i didn't want to give up a roster player that was any good. i gave up a scrub dman and a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. lots of draft pics for him. but he is one of only 3 skaters with a potential of a-. like i said though, if i had a better player perhaps the picks wouldnt have been so steep. a real easy one is landeskog. i gave up a crap minor leaguer and 2 2nds for him. didn't feel like that was much at all for a 75 with good potential.

Think this will be a holiday prezzie to myself - a PS3 and nhl 12.
Believe it or not I've never owned a console before, but I'm pretty ticked about not having hockey for the PC so I may as well cave.

HAHA wow that is some nice work. I went out and traded for RNH, Larsson, Niederreiter, Turris, and I picked up Gudbranson as a free agent. So not bad but I need a couple more youngs guys. My farm team is a wreck right now.

I've been playing BAP as a goaltender and I SUCK
I can't seem to stop the backdoor play off the rush with enough consistency. I tend to let two goals a game off this play, since my offense in front of me has never scored 3 goals in my first 15 games I'm looking at a loss right off the top.
If I try cheating a bit to gain some speed getting across the crease either the passer shoots short side or I overplay the pass
Very frustrating as I get the play roughly 12-15 times a game and two goals gets past me.
Ant tips from those that play the as Goalie to get me out of this funk

^^^ I went from hating BAP goalie to loving it after finding a solution to your problem.
When dropping to butterflyand sliding to kick the pad you are way slower than somehow magically skating sideways. Just hold your ground and if you move the moment the puck is passed (standing) then you can drop to butterfly and save it.
I always watch my replay and it is clear whether you moved after the shooter already has the puck or if you moved with the puck.
I have made a couple saves using the back on both joy sticks, right bumper and left trigger split save but they score 90% of the time. It is the greatest feeling when you get one of those!!!

Yeah playing goal is really frustrating in BAP, you're job as the goalie is to play the shot, but you're defense never picks up the backdoor man, or if there's a rebound the guy picking up the rebound.
Plus you're team never scores when you play goal or its rare that they get more then a goal a game.
I would love to play net career wise, but while the AI defense works stunningly well when you're a skater, its terrible when you play net.
