Interesting. We were at the Hitmen game this afternoon and parked on 15th Ave near Macleod southbound. We got back to the car and found a note under the windshield saying that this street was a snow route and let this notice serve as a warning not to park here during a snow route or else you'll be towed. We looked around and there isn't a single sign saying that it's a snow route and I just checked the link above and nope, it's not designated a snow route. What the heck?
Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of these parking bans if it means better snow clearing (I grew up in Winnipeg where parking bans were common), but the rules here in Calgary seem a bit odd - including moving your vehicle immediately when it's announced.
Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this goes.

I guess this should go in the GMGs thread, but I parked my car around the corner (my street is a snow route), and look up and down the street today, everyone is parked somewhere else. Great! The street's going to get plowed curb to curb instead of me having to shovel my car out!
Snowplows just go by 3x in each direction... but snow in front of house is still there. Oh, right, the neighbours have now all parked their cars back on the damn street. Are people really this dumb? To top it off, I'm sure someone is going to park in front of my house tonight too since I didn't park there.
ETA: in Ottawa, they have automatic overnight parking bans for x cm or more; but there are people with street parking permits. Tow trucks tow them off the street as the plow clears it, then moves them wherever when the plow needs to clear the next street. It's really efficient (it's in Sandy Hill for anyone from Ottawa). Only downside is that people need to hunt for their car the next day because it's never back where you parked it.

Still lots of people parked on the street here. It's either park there and risk getting ticketed, or parking in a private business lot and risk getting ticketed and towed. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Thoughts and prayers to all those caught up in a effective plan that has been successfully implemented in dozens of other cities. RIP

The idea has been done in other cities, but it's carried out differently and more effectively.
So the plow's did their passes, went around the cars (which means about 50% of the road won't be plowed). No bylaw writing tickets, no tow trucks.

Same here, though this is a residential neighbourhood (West Hillhurst) so I would expect tow and bylaw to be busy downtown.
They should do what Ottawa plows do if your car is on the street - bury it. Rest of the street gets plowed, but your car is under 3 feet of snow. They use the big graders, though. I think a sander with a blade is a bit tougher to negotiate around cars.

And Calgary is still doing it on a much smaller scale than other cities. I know in Winnipeg the parking bans apply to all streets; not just major ones.
People just have to accept that when they choose to own more vehicles than they have parking for (or decide to use their garage as a big storage locker) that doesn't give them the right to park on city streets all the time.

The cynic in me sees this as an excuse for the city to not have to plow / sand...
"We get 4 cm of snow and -20 temps... roads are icy and slippery..."
Our plows are not out sanding because we didn't get the required 5 cm to declare a snow emergency...
Lets face it this city's track record when it comes to snow clearing / winter maintenance is not the best...

But they were out plowing and sanding the other week when they were going to declare the ban but didn't.
The ban has nothing to do with whether or not the city will be plowing and sanding anyways.

So two graders go by this AM, plow the street curb-to-curb, except where cars are parked. Great, except my idiot neighbour didn't move his car, so instead of having a snowbank against my curb, I actually have to go shovel out a spot for my car because the snowbank starts at the curb then swerves out to go around the other car. Sigh. I knew this wasn't going to work! Neighbour isn't home today either so I can't tell him to move so if they come back, road gets cleared for both of us.

I walk down a snow route on my way to the train in the morning, about 7:00am this morning it was still filled with the usual cars, both sides of the street. Looks like a plow may have just run down the middle of it, but I didn't notice any tickets/notices.

Bylaw was out on New Brighton Drive issuing Warnings to cars who didn't move. I wish it was tickets. Not very difficult to move your car.
