This may not mean much to many here but I wanted to let the older association football lovers here know that Socrates, Brazils captain in the 80's and a wonderfull player has passed away at age 57 of an intestinal infection.

A bit too young to remember him, although I do recall 1986, and Brazil found a way to lose against the dirty French.
Just like 1982, after seeing highlights over the years, and now thanks to youtube, probably the prettiest soccer played in a WC in the last 40 years since Brazil in 1970, but the team didn't win anything. The captian of this team, and made the list 2 times on some of these magical goals. Prototypical Brazil....a bit of flair, cokiness, and fantastic skill, all rolled into one. The nickname came from the fact that he did study medicine.

He tried that exact penalty against France in the shootout and it was blocked.
What did he think, nobody studied tape?

Amazing to think back and two of the greatest matches in world cup history were both lost by Brazil. The 1986 game was insane, Zico, Socrates and Platini all missing penalties in the same game.

It was the 80's, if it wasn't for porn I doubt most soccer players would have known what a VHS cassete looked like. At best they glanced at the highlights while down the pub.
