No you should stay in High River and stop complaining about a measly $7 for parking in prime parking stalls while you get free health care. What more do people want? Ffs would you like the Foothills hospital to come pick you up and drop you off as well?

The idea behind paying for parking is that is covers/subsidies the cost of these enormous parking structures (in the long run at least). Last I checked, there wasn't a multi-level parkade needed in High River.

I would rather my health care dollars go into, say health care, instead of paying for people to park.

I might be blowing smoke out of my ass, but I think I recall reading that SAIT doesn't receive a penny of government money to build parkades, roads, etc., so that's why you get dinged $275/month to park in the new parkade of theirs.

It makes sense that parking revenue would go towards parking structures and other expenses not paid for by the gov't, and not towards MRI machines and nurses salaries.

I'll take a play on this. One side will say we should get picked up and if you can afford a car suck it up, why should you have a car and not me ra ra ra.

The other will say my high taxes should cover the parking at a hospital.

I say; when will people realize that no matter what it is these days it costs money, and like it or not someone is paying sooner or later. A little bit of user pay is healthy and it makes people more conscious that things aren't free.

I'm curious what the ratio of parking cost to costs incurred in the health care portion of a hospital visit are. Pretty sure the $4 or $20 for that matter is a piss in the ocean.

A number of years ago I was involved in an accident at work. I was barely able to drive myself to the hospital ER; and of course there was a bit of discussion about parking. (I hadn't brought my wallet- I was more concerned about limbs remaining attached.) They initially told me to go park on the street- I tried and almost got into an accident. I went back into the ER and went on a bit of a rant about why a person who barely makes it to the hospital has to worry about parking. A city police officer came over to me and I thought "uh-oh; now I'm in trouble."

He asked what the issue was; I told him- and he told security not to tag my car. They didn't. Moral of the story; if the situation really is that dire you don't have to pay for parking at the hospital.

I don't know why I don't want to pay it, I'd just rather not if I didn't have to. I feel like $3.50 was fair value for the time I parked and $43.50 isn't, so if it was possible to get out of it without paying I would have taken that option.

By the sounds of it though I guess I will just suck it up.
But this isn't just a little longer, its 45 minutes.

There's a meter in place, and the rules and costs are clearly posted.

Good story.

My sister is a unit clerk for one of the units at the Rockyview hospital and they receive a number of "passes" per month that they can give to people to put on their vehicles so they don't have to pay. They reserve them for people who have family members on their unit that are there long term and they are parking every day for weeks on end.

So at least they don't make everyone pay all the time and there is some compassion there as well, at the Rockyview hospital at least, not sure if they all do it.

To be honest I am surprised AHS runs the parking, and its not sold to a 3rd party. No one needs to drive to a hospital, you can take a cab or public transit.

If doctors and nurses and others have to pay a monthly fee to park, then visitors should as well, if not then visitors shouldnt have to pay either.
