Default Telephone wiring help

I've been using google this morning and I'm still not sure I'm 100% sure what I'm doing, so I thought I'd see if there are any posters that have any experience with hooking up a new phone line to a new phone jack.

I went to Canadian Tire and bought the only phone jack they had available. I thought it would be as simple as hooking up similar colors together, but apparently it's not. The Jack has 6 solid wires on it........red, green, yellow, black, blue and white. On the other hand, my phone wire has 4 twisted pairs of wires..........green/white, red/white, blue/white and orange/white. I've read sites that say as long as the green and red are connected you're good to go, others have color coded charts that are a little confusing.

Anyone know what is the correct way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

I think for phone lines you only need one pair connected...it's been a while since i had to change some wiring

I ran into this same problem last year! After much google searching I decided to sit on the couch and have a beer and forget about this problem.

It has worked until now.

One pair for sure. The thing is you have Cat5 ran as phone cable. So there are 4 pairs available.

You could do a few things to figure out which pair is live.

1) check another phone jack and see which pair that one uses. Often a contractor will do all jacks at once, and will normally use one wiring scheme on all jacks to prevent themselves from going nuts connecting them at the other end.

2) check the wiring at your utility box, as only the correct pair will be connected to the bix (or whatever you have there). Again this will only work if the same contractor did all your wiring. If it was done in stages by multiple people, all bets are off.

3) Randomly test pairs until one works. Not the best idea, but in a pinch it would work.

Strip the ends of each wire. Take one pair at a time and press it against your tongue. Have a friend call your number. When you get a shock, that's the pair you need.

Or just follow Rathji's advice. That works too.

Checking one of the other jacks already in use makes sense, I feel kind of silly for not thinking of that earlier. Blue to red, and white/blue to green. Should do the trick.

Thank you Rathji.

Yup... White/blue, blue is pair one. Same as Red, Green. Connect the two and you should be good. Polarity wont matter.

whats wrong with the TELUS modem?
