Going on a tirade is one thing, but I'm not so sure this can be a "hate crime."
What "crime" was actually committed? That fact that she's a racist ######bag doesn't mean she did anything illegal . . . I'm on the fence about this one.
EDIT: Disturbing the peace, sure, I can get that.

UK..
The penalties for hate speech include fines, imprisonment, or both.
Defiantly racist and disgraceful, and should be dealt with accordingly.

Well chalk me up as racist then - give me a title or something.
I think it's overboard. Do the people on the train deserve the abuse they got? Absolutely not but they'll be fine at the end of the day and can walk away shaking their head at what a mindless, ignorant woman they encountered on the tram.
Hate crimes are for when someone gets dragged behind a truck or beaten up outside a bar - not for some loony calling people names.
My two cents anyway.

I lvoe the people who instantly pull out their phones in the background. I wonder if they are twittering about it, or just trying to ignore it.

If they took away every child whose parent even went on a racist rant, a lot of us would have grown up in foster homes...and then been taken away from them too.

Actually, there are hate speech laws....
In Canada, advocating genocide [14] or inciting hatred [15] against any 'identifiable group' is an indictable offence under the Criminal Code of Canada with maximum prison terms of two to fourteen years. An 'identifiable group' is defined as 'any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation.' It makes exceptions for cases of statements of truth, and subjects of public debate and religious doctrine. The landmark judicial decision on the constitutionality of this law was R. v. Keegstra (1990).
In the United Kingdom, several statutes protect several categories of persons from hate speech. The statutes forbid communication which is hateful, threatening, abusive, or insulting and which targets a person on account of skin colour, race, nationality (including citizenship), ethnic or national origin, religion, or sexual orientation. The penalties for hate speech include fines, imprisonment, or both. [42][43][44][45][46][47]

I would be embarassed to be one of those people who said nothing.
Mind you I am not another female who may be worried about it getting physical.
But I would rather get beat up than let her say that crap without response.

How do you know they'll be fine? Do you think emotional abuse doesn't have long term effects?

Comments like that are the reason racism still exists.

Well - if one outburst from a drunk/high lunatic on a tram leaves you with emotional scars then I think they've got bigger problems to be honest.
All I have to compare it to are the experiences in my life having been the victim of racism numerous times and I don't think I've suffered any long term effects.

What she said does constitute a criminal offence in the UK. You could argue that the law and interpretation of it goes too far, and I certainly would, but I wouldn't bother defending this woman. At the very least I'd say she engaged in behavior likely to result in a breach of the peace.

Her behavior is particularly disturbing given that she was in charge of a young child.

Yes. But.....
People like that are angry along with any number of the following.
- drunk
- mentally unstable
- looking for a fight
- armed
Might feel mighty nice to tell them off, but you are not going to change their minds and may actually get yourself into a dangerous situation. Best to back off unless there is no other choice.

Because people have a casual view towards racism. If you give people an inch of room they take a mile.
If society didn't take actions like this with a grain of salt then racism wouldn't be as acceptable as it is now.

I dunno about emotional scars, but a lot of the racism I've experienced in my life always seem to stand out. The teens on the bus who yell "Wow it sure is NIPPY out there." The 10-year old in Italy or the kid back in Jr. High or the random guys driving by who made the slanty eyes gestures at me. The old man in Banff who told me to "Go back to where you came from" despite my best efforts to be polite to him. I was born here, d*****. The fact that most of these came from a younger generation, and not an older generation is kinda sad.
Yeah the lady probably doesn't deserve prison time or to have her kid taken away. But seriously, this bull**** has to stop.
