I don't know, maybe final exams?

Funny how its only D1 football players that need that time for finals...D2 football players, basketball players, hockey players, etc etc...all seem to manage to keep playing through the christmas season and semester break AND write their finals.
Weird.

The only group their that plays any type of demanding schedule through that period is D2 football, the rest are involved in a game or two during that period.
I don't think school demands have much to do with the gap, I just found your comment to be typically shortsighted and reeking of a 'do what I want regardless of reality' type of thinking.

LOL...there's that condescending BS stuff again...just cant help yourself can you?
That aside you pointed out the ludicrous nature of your argument twice in that mini-rant.
BBall and hockey players often play more than once a week during this time yet still manage to complete finals, while D2 players play anyhwre from 1-4 games during that time, but again D1 football players have some sort of more demanding schedule that means they cannot play during semester finals.
yeah OK....im the one who is short sighted...laughable, truly.

Apparently you were unable to read the part where I wrote "I don't think school demands have much to do with the gap".

This is all based in the idea that the only games that matter are those that decide the national title, and if that's your attitude then maybe you should stick with the NFL. There are tons of meaningful games left this year, in fact saturday night is by far the biggest college football game in decades for my team.

I get the excitement of winning the conference. But in the case of my team, win and you get a date with some crappy Big East team in the Orange Bowl, woohoo.
How much more exciting would this weekend be if they were playing for an 8 team playoff. Oregon,Houston,Georgia,Boise State,Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State,Wisconsin,UCLA,Oklahoma would likely all be playing for a chance to get in. And it would likely make the conference championships even more meaningful as they'd likely get a playoff spot, instead of a crappy BCS bowl bid. It would probably be the most anticipated weekend of the college football year, instead of a fairly meaningless one.
It is all the bowls that seem so silly now. It used to be better before they went to a nc game. At least then, they'd have the 2 best teams mixed in the traditional bowls, instead of having them removed. Looks like this year, only one of the bcs bowls has a shot at giving us a decent match up.

An 8 team playoff would probably be more exciting this weekend, but it would have made Fridays LSU-AR game pointless, so we can go back to your initial point and just change the date. Same goes for the LSU-Bama game and the Oregon-Stanford game.
And that doesn't even get into the whole mess of trying to separate team 8 from team 9.

I think this is where the playoffs and polls argument in general is flawed. A league can have polls or playoffs but not both and definately polls cannot be used to determine playoff teams. It has to be concrete.
As I mentioned before 4 mega-conferences, balance schedules and and 8 berths, two from each conference however they determine it. Sure that means this year Arkansas would miss out but that's just too bad.
I know that college football is reluctant to change and schedules have been made for the next 10-15 years so we're not getting any closer to a solution.

I am not necessarily against a rematch in principle but not interested in this rematch because a. the first game was boring (no need to hack it out again but it wasn't because of the defensive struggle so much as crap offenses.) and b. I am not sure these are the top two teams out there.

I think it is a lot easier justifying keeping out a team that likely has two losses, most likely with at least one of those being to a bad team, than it is to choose between a couple of 1 loss teams that likely all have much more reasonable losses.
I guess to me if you are fighting for the 8th spot in CFB these days you are not a great team whereas there are plenty of great teams that have ended up 3rd/4th and to me leaving them out is a lot bigger of a mistake than a good 9th place team.
But I support play-offs and absolutely can't see how anyone can support the BCS so my view is likely biased and I have debated enough to know that BCS supporters are stuck in the mud when it comes to their system.

I get your point on the first issue, it's a lot harder to moan as a 2 loss team than as a 1 loss team, but it doesn't change the fact that you're giving a team a shot at a title based on polls and computers, which is an argument playoff proponents always bring up.
I think a plus one is the perfect system. We get to discover if Ok State is a great team who had a bad day against ISU or is just overhyped. We get to find out if Bama can hang with Oregon etc. etc. Play that round of games and I'd say that most years you'll have 2 teams that have clearly made their case.

How does the plus one work? They put 4v1 2v3 in bowls? Seems like picking the top 4 would be a nightmare this year. Does Alabama get in over other one loss teams that won their conference? 2 loss Oregon gets in ahead of one loss Stanford? How do you pick between VT, Oregon,Stanford and Ok State?

The plus one as I understand it, and support it, wouldn't be a semi finals type thing, it would basically just be another game following the bowls. Teams would go to the BCS bowls as they do now (maybe replace the NC game with the Cotton Bowl so there are still 5 big games) and then the top two would be selected.
I like it because it allows teams to be judged based on a recent game against a top level opponent in addition to their regular season performances. It's not perfect, but if the goal is to find the best team in the country I think it accomplishes that without doing away with the importance of the regular season.

Yes in +1 the BCS bowls just become like another week of the regular season but with guaranteed good matchups. Then after that do the BCS standings again and THEN the top 2 go to the NC.

If Florida almost gave him a heart attack, what the hell is going to happen at OSU.

Chicago would have been great, but the Big Ten seemed unwilling to go outdoors, which is a shame. And who wants to go to Indy in December? If the game was in Chicago I'd be going for sure.
