[Rumor] Xbox 720?
http://www.computerandvideogames.com...tedly-planned/
Quote:
the platform holder is expected to take the two model approach much further with its new console. It will reportedly offer a "pared down system to be released as cheaply as possible, and positioned more along the lines of a set-top box (the use of 360 as a Netflix viewing platform in the US is colossal) and perhaps as a Kinect-themed gaming portal".
|
Quote:
"a more fully-featured machine with optical drive, hard disk and backward compatibility aimed at the hardcore would be released at a higher price-point", the site adds.
It also claims Kinect is likely to receive a significant upgrade, and will more than likely be bundled with the console.

Microsoft is rumoured to be planning to make the first official announcements about its next-gen Xbox at the CES expo in January 2012, while Edge has heard from sources that the system may launch as early as next year.

Interesting . . . A two console release strategy. I think that might actually be successful given the slow sales both XBox 360 and PS3 had when they were released due to the high cost. This strategy seems like a "lessons learned" approach combined with taking advantage of already available technology for the casual console user.

looks like the cheap one will be a casual use platform, geared for Netflix other streaming purposes, while the full one will be your standard gaming console. that makes a lot more sense then trying to sell a "core" system with no hard drive or peripherals

Sounds like they've learned a lesson from Wii sales this generation. Casual gamers don't really care about hardcore graphics or optical disc drives. They want to just pick up something simple and play. Plus a lot of them are compulsive buyers going along with a trend. Position the cheap model properly, and you'll capture these trend followers. That's probably why they're still considering bundling Kinect with the cheaper model.

Well.....that's great news! I have one of the originals and it's treated me very well but I wouldn't mind an updgrade soon. Hope the optical drive is Blueray.....
Wonder why kind of upgrade for Kinect they have planned?

Compared to what?
It is on par with a PS3 and better than a Wii. That's all the consoles right there.

Not only that, it seems as though they are still tapping into the potential of the 360 and PS3. Games seem to be getting better and better.

I can tell you my computer is far superior to the 360 at this point. Just look at Battlefield 3 for example. The PC version is much better graphically and can support almost 3 times the number of players. Games really haven't pushed the boundaries (technology wise) for the past number of years. Heck Crysis 2 was trashed for having worse graphics than the original Crysis.

Umm PC's will be superior to all and any gaming consoles for a long time coming...in case you didn't know.

It's not going to be called the Xbox 720.
They'll call it Xbox 3 before they call it Xbox 720.
But it won't be Xbox 3 since Sony will have Playstation up to 4 now.
The possibilities...

I doubt they go with Xbox 3, PS3 has been around too long now and already has the 3, doesnt make much sense from a marketing standpoint. I will call it - Xbox 3.5 - make it that much better then the PS3

Seriously what's with the computer gaming crowd? I always played Madden, NHL & the new GTA but that was about it as far as my gaming experience went, until about a year and a half ago when I realized how awesome new games have gotten. Because of it, I read the gaming threads a lot more now (not just here, but other MB's too), and I never realized how snobby the PC gamer crowd was compared to PS/XBox. You're all better than us, we get it.
EDIT: As for when the new systems will be out, I bet its not until well into 2013. With the new GTA coming out and rumoured around late 2012, I can't imagine Rockstar would release its biggest game at the same time that new consoles were coming out.

Why not?
For a few years after both the XBox360 and PS3 were out, the highest selling console games were for the ps2. It is actually pretty good timing, if you can swing the (possibly?) shorted dev time. Especially if your game can sell for both the old consoles and the new, but I don't know how that would work.

I still doubt it, but we'll see I guess. If anything, if that's the case I hope that points to a spring '12 GTA release, though with R*'s Max Payne coming out in March, it doesn't seem likely. I don't think I've ever been this jacked for a game release before, I want it yesterday.

As a primarily PC gamer, I hope a new generation of consoles is released soon. So many games are multi-platform (often with the console versions being the target platform), and it's clear the PC versions are being held back by the hardware limitations of the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Actually, the more I think about it, if I can build a PC with 4 year old parts that will match what a console will do, then they need to have new consoles. You can pretty much do that now.
