I thought of this, and realized the last thing I want to be doing is fighting with my wife for TV time. Of course I could buy a HD TV, but at that point I might as well just upgrade the PC and save a bit of cash.

Wow the iron dagger / leather bracer smithing got my smithing up to 80 and my level up to 30 in no time. I can't believe how much you can improve weapons. I'm dual-wielding ebony daggers each with a base damage of 37*, and that's not even legendary. The sneak attack multiplier uses only the base damage in its equation, so this is very important. I haven't had an enemy survive a dual power sneak attack yet.
Add some enchantments and poison to that (or even a pair of gloves that doubles your sneak attack damage again) and you're an instrument of death.
I've gotta say, stealth gameplay in Skyrim is hugely satisfying.
*I think. I'll confirm later.

Leather bracers! Gah I've been scrounging for Iron (how much iron did I skip picking up early in the game?! *weeps*), but leather is so easy to come by.
Mind you I think I'm high enough to get Dwarven smithing and I have like 150 ingots of that stuff.

I realized my current card will play Skyrim if I jack the resolution down to 800x600, and turn everything else off, so I started playing yesterday. I have done the first few quests, as a dual casting dark elf sneaky mage, killed the first dragon to become Thane of Whiterun. So far I love the game - perfect week for the wife to be out of town!
One thing that has me stumped though, where the heck do you get pickaxes?

Call me crazy, but I'm playing this on PC with a Xbox 360 gamepad. I tried kb+m, but it seems the game was designed with console controls in mind, so the gamepad provides a better experience. That said, I'd probably have a different opinion if I was playing as an archer or spellcaster and needed more precise controls for aiming.

The blacksmith in Whiterun sells one if memory serves. Really cheap thing to get too.

I play as an archer on Xbox and have no control issues.

Everything you need to know to get Skyrim running smoothly. One quick fix I found was changing my sound to 44.1Khz.

Why would I want to lower the quality of my sound tho? Doesnt that seem like a bad fix?

What sound system are you running that you can notice the downgrade to CD-quality audio?

Leather bracers for the win, I had like 140 leather and 55 leather strips, by the time I went through all those I was at 71 smithing.
Got dwarven smithing and #!@& you can't smith anything with just the dwarven ingots, they all require something different..
(Oh and I had 450 dwarven metal ingots!!)
Bows only need iron extra so got some iron and crafted like 40 bows, then went and enhanced them all and sold them, leveled up so got the smithing perk to enhance enchanted weapons, enhanced all those, then enhanced all the iron daggers and leather bracers I had, now almost at 81 for smithing.
I had found some ebony armour too and the guards comment on it now lol.
Oh and if you have that daedric mace that you get from a quest, the guards comment on that to. "Get that mace away from me" or something like that.

Why would I buy the inferior version of the game when I can play it years down the road and have it modded to perfection with loads of free graphic updates, quests, bug fixes, total conversions, etc.?

So what are people spending perks on?
Combat? Crafting? Somethign else?
I am only level 4 right now, and have only put 1 perk into lockpicking. Want to try and figure the best way to maximize the utility before I blow them all.

I am a stealth archer...Spent most of my points on smithing, archery, sneak and one point in conjuration (or which ever gives you dual healing) and light armour...Might be another random point on another 1 or 2, but i would say 95% go to smithing, archery, sneak.

I'd highly recommend choosing one combat tree to specialize in, and making that your primary target for perks. Don't spend all your perks there, but be aware of how many perks you'll need as your skill in that area progresses towards 100, so that you don't fall behind your enemies.
I've got most of my perks in sneaking, smithing, and one-handed.

I always put a lot into the armour type I'm using and the primary damage source. Those two seem to scale really well. I put a little into Restoration for a mage (so you can get the regen bonus) and that's about it so far. Might go with smithing for a character who actually uses the smithed items.
