I wonder if Ferland left the game early or he played on a separate line from Stone. Ferland had 0 points while Stone had 4 points. If he played the whole game read into that what you will.

In a perfect world, you trade Kiprusoff and keep Irving and both he and Karlsson take huge steps forward. That way you've got two 20 something netminders at a low cap hit and you trade a veteran for future growth.

Kipper has been dynamite for the Flames, but his tenure won't last forever. I wouldn't mind if he stayed a Flame for the rest of his days but I see the advantage of trading him under the right conditions.

If I'm not mistaken Irving is a UFA after this season. Who knows if he is willing to resign with the flames at this point? I could see him willing to try his luck elsewhere considering our goalie situation.

edit- capgeek says he's still an RFA. GLORIOUS NEWS.

Yea, he's still an RFA.

However, there was talk about him exploring his options in Europe.

If he keeps this up and isnt given a legit chance to play in the NHL next year, he could go.

The Flames have some decisions to make, and the fact that Irving, Karlsson and Kiprusoff all seem to be playing well and have the confidence of their teammates probably doesn't make the decision(s) any easier.

It's a good problem to have. It's hard to say how much you'd get back for Kipper, as older goalies aren't bringing back too much these days. But if Karlsson keeps playing good and other teams start to think he's a potential #1 someone might give us a really good return on him.

As much as I'd hate it to see him on another team, but shipping Kiprusoff for picks at some point next year might be the best for the Flames. Irving has to make the next step and Hank is a good and fairly young goaltender as well. Irving/Karlsson could make for an interesting tandem for years.

Cue the Kipper or hank rumours to CBJ at the deadline or most likely offseason.

Alternately, if the Flames are thoroughly pleased with their current tandem, the top goalie in the AHL should net a good return should they elect to move him.

What could make this difficult is that if you want to keep Kipper and Hank, when would you move Leland? What would it say to your minor league team if you dealt Irving let's say before the end of the year (I guess they'd wait until the season's end.)

Any decision won't be easy; that's for sure.

Leland Irving was named the AHL Player of the Week for last week:

Quote:
Irving made four starts last week and stopped 109 of 115 shots, going 3-1-0 with a 1.47 goals-against average, a .948 save percentage and two shutouts as the Heat staked claim to the best record in the Western Conference.

That's the second time this season the Heat have been honored with Player of the Week.

Irving's play this season is almost thread-worthy.

I think with Irving it might be a good idea to let him play a few games with the flames.

I could also see management waiting to see how he performs in the playoffs (assuming the heat make it)...don't want someone who ####s the bed when it matters ala Luongo.

Calgary Flames Heat Report: Linkage

HEAT TOPS IN THE AHL
Quote:
The Heat (13-5-1-0) are tied at 27 points with the St. John’s IceCaps (Winnipeg Jets affiliate) and though St. John’s does have one fewer game played, Abbotsford has made a name for itself as the best in the West and a team to reckon with on the road.
GOALTENDING DUEL
Quote:
In their 1-0 shootout win Sunday evening, the Heat’s Leland Irving made 34 saves in regulation and overtime, and then stopped all five shootout attempts.
Irving now leads the AHL in shutouts with his third blank sheet, while he also is the leader in wins (13), minutes played (1,022) and shootout wins (three). His goals against average is a stingy 1.94 to go with his .927 save percentage.

Good to see Irving still dominate the AHL. I think it's time for his NHL debut next year. Get rid of Karlsson and get Irving in. Karlsson has terrible rebound control and let's in way too many goals high (cause he goes down too early). Get Irving in there as he will probably be our #1 goalie going forward.

i don't know how good irving is, as i only see him during the flames camp/preseason, but i just can't imagine him being that much worse than Karlsson. It's a shame though, i'd love to see karlsson play a game where the flames actually play and score. Not much most goalies in the league can do, even the best ones, when the offense struggles to score a goal or more each game they play.

This. I'm not sure even Irving could win them games when the average goals for per game in front of their backup is 1.50.

Goaltending and defence isn't the Flames' problem. They're 3rd last in the entire league in goals for.

Just when I thought I found the last remaining 'somewhat' positive thread on this site.

By the way, Reinhart has a goal and an assist tonight. Leach has a goal too.
