Some video from this morning at Occupy Calgary.
Regular citizen walks by and decides to voice his opinion.
This idiots dad must be so proud.
I don't work.
I get that people don't think that morons like this are the face of the Occupy Movement in Calgary, but between that rat hole cesspool that they call a camp, the whole meditation and spirit thing at city hall, the idiot that accused Canadian troops of genocide, the morons whining that the city is at fault for the fire, and idiots like this, I would have to say that the lunatic fringe is the face of the Occupy Calgary movement.

Everyone on Council is frustrated with the situation and want them out, but it's not that simple.
That's the worst Nenshi bashing I've ever seen.
I thought a Judge in Toronto had put the eviction there on hold, seems to make sense that you'd have to see how that plays out since it would become prescient for what will happen here wouldn't it?

^ In Victoria a few years ago the BC Supreme Court basically shot down the City's parks by-law because of tenting of homeless people in parks and their Charter Rights. Think about the implications of that for a second and how it relates to Occupy.

Right but that seemed to be an issue around lack of housing, this isn't really comparable IMO (I'm sure the protesters think it's completely comparable).
Just provide the protesters another space, say in the green space by an underpass somewhere

Yes, the BC case was based on section 7 of Charter & the city didn't have enough spots in the homeless shelters.
Occupy Calgary is claiming protection under section 2 "expression".
Section 1 of the Charter makes remarks on the guarantee of rights and it also states within "reasonable limits".
Not talking about the specific claims under the charter of each case, but about the implications of losing a case such as this, and what's necessary to not lose.
If you are Nenshi fan, likely best not to read it.
Also strong language in the third video (IIRC)
I don't think there will be more. I really don't like him going down there.
Actually I enjoyed the read very much, thanks for posting. I think he could have made his point very well without that one paragraph about Nenshi's reproductive organs, but nonetheless I'm glad he is posting videos that are exposing the Occupy folks for what they are.

Yeah, I think he is too involved... (understatement)
Now that I'm home, we've had a chance to talk and I've learned the only way Cory got video today was due to a friendly (and large) construction worker, who agreed to walk with him as he took footage.
He tells me he has no plans of going down again; but won't make it a promise.
I've pretty much resigned to the fact that city council is okay with what is happening. I look forward to a summer of #occupystampede & #occupysikome
I think Nenshi is a great mayor, and handling this well. I think every mayor dealing with an Occupy movement, without Nenshi being singled out, is dealing with this on a similar level. It's a fine line to draw between civil liberties and enforcing the law, I agree. I don't like the protest in Olympic Plaza, but I'm very happy Council has been lenient about the whole thing until now. They have cordially allowed the protestors to do their schtick for as long as they could.
In more turbulent cities around the world, there'd be much less desirable outcomes in situations such as these (violence, brutality). Thank God we don't take that route. Violence is never the answer to anything.

As opposed to other cities in North America who have all cleared out the protesters? oh wait...

So how did Halifax manage to get this done? Are they risking a challenge or did they come to the conclusion that they have a strong enough case?
I'm no constitutional lawyer, but I can't see how the charter means you can occupy any property just because. Surely I couldn't just occupy center ice at the Saddledome based on a protest, or at least I would face legal action and fines if I did. A judge isn't going to hold up someones right to trespass, whether its called a protest or not.

Ok, was the guy standing there arguing about the fire while holding the constitution in his hand wearing a dress and high heels or was it a bad video.
And he was arguing that the city should provide them with electricity under section 7 (Thats what I heard)
Quote:
7. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.
I somehow think that the founders didn't draft that with free electricity and freeloading in mind.
These people are just utter morons.

LOL - the city is criminally responsible because some mental midget almost set himself on fire by having an open flame in his nylon tent? Is it any wonder than no one takes them pukes seriously?
How, exactly, is the city responsible?
The fire department should have come down there at 3AM and to ensure the fire was properly under control and to ensure the safety of all (wouldn't want any crimial responsibility now would we) doused the entire area with a good soaking for 10 or 15 minutes.
It's amazing how a bunch of petulant whiners with a persecution complex has brought out the worst in a lot of people.
These people should really have not been given the time of day. They have nothing to lose and their only desire is to have someone bash their head in to satisfy and validate their anti-authority paranoia.
A lot of people seem more than happy to give them that satisfaction.

It doesn't have to be that way at all. I saw some video of the Halifax camp being dismantled and while there was some physical contact and arrests it was far from brutal. In fact it looked well controlled and the police just did what had to be done.
