John Ramage
Story (mostly) about Rob Ramage and the relationship with John Ramage. Interesting little read.

Canada02 has a link to another Ramage article in the prospects thread.

I haven't seen John Ramage play a lot, mostly World Junior games and a bit with Wisconsin, but he strikes me as a defenseman that plays with heart, hustle, and hockey IQ rather than natural talent. He may have limited offensive upside, but from what I have seen he has the ability to make a good first pass.
Ramage doesn't get a lot of attention since he's not flashy and playing NCAA hockey, but I think he could fill an important role with the Flames in a couple of years.
I have tried to think of a NHL comparable in terms of style of play and two players come to mind: Andrew Ference and Stephane Robidas. If Ramage were to progress and end up like either of those two, I would be pleased with the 4th round selection.

Good coaches know that you never underestimate the importance of character and team dynamics. The guys who can keep the locker room together, provide leadership and motivate those around them are just as useful as the guys with top-end skill. I can think of no greater example than one Craig Conroy who filled that role nicely. Dave Lowry was another.
I see John Ramage as a possible future captain. And you definitely want to develop personalities like that.

From what I've heard/read about him, I think he fits the mold of the "new breed" of shut down defenseman.
Not just a big, lumbering, hard hitting, tree on skates.
But a d-man who uses size, mobility, smarts and positioning to shut down opposing players. Being able to make a good first pass is key as well.
My hope is that he turns into a more mobile version of a guy like Scott Hannan.

I know Feaster asked Ramage if he would like to turn pro this season, but Ramage declined and said getting better at hockey and getting an education was more important at this point in time. Fair enough. But it just goes to show that the organization is really high on this kid.
Plus, I remember reading an article that said Ramage was quite impressed when the Flames gave him his dad's old number. He said he'd be proud to wear the number and the colours.

Another good thing Ramage IMO, is he doesn't seem like the type of player who would book it to the bench if a scrum/line brawl broke out on the ice.

Hahaha, I guess that's to be expected from a junior University student.

Robidas comparison may be a little lofty but would love to see him develop on the same path!

I would be happy if Ramage developed into a similar player as Hannan. Not too flashy, but gets the job done when needed.

That'd be great, but after watching tonight's game, I hope he turns into Bobby Orr.

It seems unlikely that he would. If he decided that college was important enough for a 3rd year it would seem that he would finish it for a 4th.
Only way I see him turning pro next year is if the Flames promise him a top 6 position in the lineup (or he does something stupid to disqualify his NCAA eligibility)

I remember a quote from John suggesting finishing college was very important to him. I think he will have one more year at College before turning pro.

Rob Ramage was always one of my favorite defenceman alongside Jamie Macoun from back in the day of punishing defenceman that played for the Flames .
Hopefully John follows in all dads footsteps on the ice
