It's the unnamed side quest you get after defeating the first dragon. The one where some courier hands you a slip of paper that crypically hints at it. Once inside Hag's End, it's just filled with Witches and the Hagraven who runs off every quarter of health you knock off her.
The Hagraven basically just stands still and lobs fireballs at you.

Same. I didn't even carry around cure disease potions until I realized you could get sick WAY easier in Skyrim than Oblivion.

One of the diseases I had was 25% off single handed, no wonder things were harder to kill.
I think I really need to get to the Mage's college do they give better spells? Had an encounter recently where I could not kill one guy almost no matter what I did (and everyone else in the fort I killed pretty easily). He had a sword and shield, and I could only back up so far. I couldn't out DPS his sword with my magic, and I couldn't attack with just my sword as he had his shield to block most of the attacks.
I had to try it a zillion times till a combination of all my healing potions and hitting with every frost bolt and him missing a few times and my conjured thing attacking him instead of someone else and some other random things that went my way to beat him.

You don't need the Mage's college necessarily to get better spells. You can buy spellbooks from anyone who sells them. The court mage in Whiterun sells a bunch of them.
Also, the destruction magic perks help. If you're using frost, get the one that gives frost spells +25% damage. Dual wielding spells also helps (especially with the dual wielding destruction perk). Also try using a weakness to frost potion on him if you're still having trouble.
And, in general, when someone has you backed into a corner the unrelenting force shout will usually knock them back enough for you to get out of it.

That's the dumbest thing, is I always forget my shouts.
Good hints thanks, the 25% frost perk I actually got the next level up, and I guess I should have just given up on the sword and dual wielded spells at that point, forgot about that as well.
EDIT: Anyone gone up to see the Greybeards yet? Worth doing early? That's the main quest line I figure and I'm having fun enough so far screwing around with all the mini quests.

How do you even find out what they do or what diseases you have other than people telling you you're sick?

I think they scale the same as your weapons and armour...as in, they'll sell better the higher you get in level. I rushed my way to the college and they basically just have a better supply of your level's spells (they sell all the non-DPS single shot spells, which seem like a rarity outside the college).
As for killing enemies...without enemy with wards, most of them melt to dual casting Flame. I've got a couple perks in improving basic destruction damage, both dual cast perks, and +25% fire damage. Most enemies will get within a few feet and collapse. If magika runs out in a decent grouping of enemies with bulky stats, back pedaling and throwing a little fire on them will generally finish them off. Aside from some bosses (like Dragons early game), they'll die before you die...and if that fails, you've got a few potions to fall on for added spellcasting or health regeneration.
If that doesn't work, a combination of stealth and casting two seperate projectile spells (as oppose to casting one projectile spell with both hands) will help pick off a crowd...thought it's rarely needed.
It also helps if you take the 1st perk in Restoration to make healing way easier on your magika bar. I find any other realm of magic is pretty useless in the realm of a fight, as any summoned creature takes friendly fire (which is real amusing when I'm in a team fight...I keep accidentally killing allies) and eats up too much magika, while alteration's bonuses help more a magic knight more than a mage. Plus, you get no sneak bonus for magic so Illusion is also pretty meaningless

Has anybody been able to successfully favorite their dual wield weapons? I've bound my bow to key 1, and I can swap back and forth from my default dual wield to bow, but as soon as I use a spell I can only swap back to one of my swords. Then I have to go back into my inventory and re-equip the other sword.
Either I'm not doing something right, or this is a huge pain in the ass.

Hotkeying isn't working consistently for me either. It'll work for awhile and then my daggers hotkey will be mysteriously unassigned, or something. Very frustrating.

I finally figured out in the Magic menu at the very bottom there's an option which will show you all the effects you have, I thought it was just to list bonuses but it shows diseases and such as well.

Same with me for the diseases. Didn't know until I walked outside during the day and it said my skin was burning.. that I realized I had turned into a vampire. Being a vampire is horrible too, when everyone sees you they try to kill you instantly. Fast traveled to dragonreach and got gang raped by guards and neighbours .
On the main quest did anyone get stuck when trying to talk to Esbern?? There is text and he doesn't speak and doesn't open the door...

You have to feed and that doesn't happen though, right?

Not that I've heard of. I think you just progressively turn into one unless you do a sidequest that involves random murdering.

No once you're a vampire it only progresses if you don't feed, and people don't attack you until it's progressed for days.

So I've played a total of 31 hours in these 4 days since release. I'm not sure a game has ever taken such a hold of me. When I'm not playing, im thinking about the game, when I am playing 4 hours passed during what seemed like 20 minutes.
I wanted to wake up early (7am) Sunday morning so I would be tired for Sunday night (had class monday morning). To keep me awake in the morning I played skyrim, I was wide awake...I played all day and until 2am, and missed my class.
Sorry if that last sentence was hard to understand, its 2am and I just finished playing skyrim to the point of passing out.
This game is that good.

Guys... make your own potions. The alchemy tables that are everywhere are one of the most useful things in this game. When I'm out adventuring, I gather up any ingredients I see along the way. They are light to carry because they are all plants and grass and crap, so it doesn't really affect all the big stuff you loot. Take all of this stuff back to the alchemy table and start mixing it together. Pretty soon you will have potions for everything. You will never have to buy a potion and you will always have the exact potion you need in combat. I probably have about 50 different potions, and I don't play as a mage or an alchemist. I'm a nord with a two handed warhammer that does 50+ damage.

speaking of hacks that are more really game "enhancements", i remember in Oblivion a hack that gave you infinite charges on whatever enchantment you put on a weapon. i find having to recharge my axe whenever i enchant it with something very lame, i'd rather have it be permanent like every other RPG out there. do you know if someone has released a similar hack for Skyrim yet?

Hmmm I guess I am not doing enough exploring according to what everyone is saying. Lvl 20 stealthy wood elf archer, I think around 60-70 sneak and archery. Currently I have 2 bows, one is +28 attack with fire damage added and one is +28 attack with frost damage.
I haven't encountered any vampires yet, I just got to Solitude and was just asked to clear out the vamps. I've been busy doing some quests for the Thieves guild, and only killed 3 dragons. Met up with the greybeards and they wanted me to go get something for them so that's where I am in the main quest.
I have a soul stealing dagger, but any time I use it it says I don't have any gems that are big enough...I have plenty of empty soul gems, anyone know how to make it work?
