Try not to watch highlights. But I'm sure that if I were 6'7 and I was within say 4' of the rim it's not going to be too terribly hard to get a bucket... However I think the NBA is terrible product.

I guess you didn't realize that in a real game there is actually 5 guys from the other team trying to prevent you from doing that. Maybe you should just stick to other threads.

An ignorant comment from Afc? Say it ain't so

In all honesty I used to think basketball was non-contact, then I started playing it. Even a pick-up league it gets pretty physical, totally changed my viewpoint on the game.

I've played the game for years, and it drives me nuts how terrible the professional product is. And the majority of stars are so incredibly unlikeable, I have no idea how it draws the numbers that it does.

Actually it was only half ignorant, its too late now but if I was going to design a game like basketball I would allow soccer like contact and guarding etc so that it became a game of 15 or 20 point scores and became more of a physical team game.

I have, incidently played basketball in high school (which was pretty rare in the UK) and it is a fun game to play, but I find it boring as all get out to watch.

Soccer like contact? So less contact?

As per TSN the players have rejected the latest offer and are looking to disband the union. I think this basically ends the season unless there is a small miracle.

What's the purpose in disbanding the union here?

Haven't really followed this - but does anyone else find it weird that Derek Fisher is leading the players? Or is there someone else "behind the scenes", and Fisher is just doing all the talking?

I assume it's the same plan as the NFLPA, decertify the union then bring an anti-trust suit

I'm no expert, but without a union the players can sue the nba and challenge the legality of the lockout. It basically comes down to a judge ruling now, who can decide whether or not the owners are allowed to lock the doors. I think that if the judge decides that the owners cannot lock the doors that they will temporarily use the old CBA while they try to agree on a new one.

This is just what I remember from the NFL lockout and I could easily have some details wrong here. Basically it goes to court which takes a long time to process.

Didn't that not work though?

I don't think it ever got to the point of working or failing before they struck a deal, although to be honest I didn't pay that close of attention to it.

The big difference here is that at this point I would think the season is all but lost, so there's less reason to get a deal done as opposed to letting the courts sort out the issues. It could set some ground changing precedent for professional sports in America.

Executive director Billy Hunter is really the guy who's calling the shots. He's been in his role for 15 years, and he appointed the legal council that seemed determined to go with the antirtust strategy from day 1. There's also a powerful group of agents who have been pushing a similar agenda to their players. The rank and file player membership didn't get to vote on the current proposal, and probably won't get a say on decertification.

Honestly, I wish a judge would stand up to a union that pretends to disband. As far as I am concerned, this is bad faith negotiating on the part of the NBAPA, as it was on the part of the NFLPA.

The pictures of Derek Fisher and Billy Hunter with all the players standing in the back in some "show of solidarity" are just incredibly hilarious to me. Fight on against those injustices NBA players ... fight on.

Any sports union has a player, or several more factually, who are in on negotiations. Nothing unusual about that at all.

I think it was about this time last year after listening to several people who were to be involved in this thing, that i pretty much surmised the NBA would lose at least an entire season...and it really does look like it will go that way at this point.
