This sucks. I actually have "stuff" to do tonight, I'm at work right now, I have stuff to do on Saturday and on Sunday. Real life sucks. I just want to live in a fantasy world for a few or 300 hours!
Having never played the earlier Elder Scrolls games, what's the combat like in actual use? From the videos, it looks like it's just click-swing, click-shoot, and or click-spell for either hand, without much strategy or depth.
Pretty much. Combat is similar to any of the other hack-and-slash RPGs out there. The appeal, for me at least, is more what weapons, armour, magic, rings, etc you equip your character with. There a huge selection and everything has advantages and disadvantages so the strategy is more focused around using the right combination in the right situations. That said, I still find the combat fun and challenging.
One think that was unique to Oblivion compared to other RPGs is that the enemies level up with you. They kind of had to do that since you are not required to do the game in any particular order, but some people would get annoyed by it. I'm just installing Skyrim as a type this, so I'm not sure whether it uses the same strategy.

Well, this game is definitely game of the year. I need more free time!!
What kind of characters is everyone playing?
I decided to roll a Nord, but I'm going the Stealth route. I'm mainly invested in stealth, archery, and one handed weapons. It's a ton of fun - I just into the theives guild, so I can't wait to start stealing! Dark Brotherhood comes next!
I played the first hour last night before bed and it seems very impressive (PC) the interface is slick and the world is beautiful. I really enjoyed the opening sequence - I like how Bethesda gets you to introduce your characters to their games.
Yeah I've read the console menus are horrible, that sometimes the mouse works and sometimes not, sometimes keyboard works and sometimes not, and when each works seems kind of random.

When you guys who played until 5AM get up I would like an update on the game. I have it preloaded and ready to go when I get home.
My take after playing 4 hours or so
- The environment is incredible. I climbed a mountain in a snowstorm and the blowing snow effects were pretty cool
- Hand to hand combat is better than Oblivion, but pretty much the same when it comes to the mechanics. Blocking with a shield requires timing to maximize the shield's protection
- Levelling is pretty good so far. It felt really quick at the start, but once I hit level 6 it slowed down quite a bit. The perks have potential, but I haven't unlocked anything cool yet.
- Stealth is better than Oblivion. There were a few times that I was able to duck out of sight after alerting my enemies.
- The side quests are pretty cool.
Spoiler!
There was one where I got tricked by a bandit and walked directly into an ambush.
- The crafting seems neat, but I haven't used it much. I enchanted a bow with +magic damage but ran out of arrows and haven't been back to town yet :/

Nice, I went with a Dark Elf. Planning on going the Stealth Mage route.
I hated Oblivion's lockpicking system and really enjoyed Fallout's.
I think they ramped up the difficulty of the lockpicking a bit though which is awesome. In fallout, as long as I had the skill points to pick a lock I very rarely broke a pick.
I can see how people liked the Oblivion lockpicking game though. As a console player, it just frustrated me to no end though. I invested my time learning a spell that opened locks instead

anyone with the PC version having a problem with their custom key bindings not saving when you quit? everytime i start the game i have to re-bind all my keys again, which is getting very irritating considering the absolute mess that the PC UI is in. really hope modders can fix what obviously Bethesda is too lazy to do right
