I'm not sure what I was supposed to respond to as you didn't ask a question.

I did none the less point out that Penn State is a vast charity that relies on tuition and donations to survive, the football program is totally dependant on donations, as such a PR hit is very very bad, how much money would you donate to 'Save the children" if you found out kids they were supposed to be helping were being sodomised by their employees?

I beg to differ:

Why? The Maple Leafs had a very similar scandal and their fans never stopped buying their merchandise.

I actually thought of that today but they arn't rely alike, it was a couple of ushers or the like if memory serves me, and the Leafs weren't held liable in any way, this is far similer to the Scouts or the Catholic Church's problems.

And as been mentioned, their program is going to be hard pressed to recruit next year, so they will blow on the field, which is also a merchandise killer.

I don't understand the mindset of suspending the football program. This incident isn't football related at all. It just involves personnel whom were involved in the football operations. The only thing that needs to be done is remove those associated to this act and move on. Why is suspension necessary? It doesn't make a difference in all this and establish a precedent of warring for this type of perverted act. That's already been established by the law and society.

Football operations should be suspended if it's in violations of rules related to football, or is being used as a foundation for a committed, organized illegal act.

You can make an arguement that the whole programs administration colluded to cover up Sandusky's activities in order to protect the program, that would show a grevious lack of values in a program that is supposed to teach values, it could qualify as the program being used to commit an illegal act, as non disclosure of child abuse is an illegal act.

The college is now being investigated by the feds as it would seem they have breached federal law in the way they handeled the disclosure, that could lead Penn St to lose its accreditation for federal funding.

Cars.com has pulled out of sponsering the next 2 televised games

Realistically though if the program gets suspended it will be as an act of damage control for the College and the NCAA, this is rightfully being described as the worst scandel to ever hit the NCAA and it is probably going to get alot worse.

There are a lot of really strange coincidences which need further investigation. Everything from the missing DA, to the claim that Paterno only received "vague" information regarding to what McQuery saw, and how it doesn't correlate with what he told others, especially the Grand Jury, to Sandusky's not taking over as the heir to Paterno's job, yet he was still allowed access to the university and its facilities.

There's an awful lot of smoke here which points directly to this story being much, much bigger. Then again, it could be the press and everybody else caught up in the emotion and shock about what we do know.

One interesting point Mark Madden made in an interview with a PA radio station is that State College is "different" in the sense that it operates much like a Fiefdom, or a company town that was more reminiscent of the late 19th early 20th C. United States, and that Paterno and the whole program has an awful lot of power, money and influence (of course, the same could be said to a lot of high-powered collegiate programs).

Madden was also in another interview rather insistent that he is pretty sure that another story will break about involving this story about Sandusky's pimping out kids to rich donors through his foundation.

I'd seen this online but was loathe to mention it as it had no source, if that turns out to be true god knows how it will reflect on the NCAA and college football in general but you can expect at least a senate comittee ala steroids in baseball.

I found the fact that they arrested the guy a few weeks after Paterno got his record setting 409th win somewhat chilling as well.

Again the rumour is they didn't want to arrest him until the record had fallen.

I don't understand the love for Paterno still. He obviously knew his assistant was doing inappropriate things with boys in 97.

Regardless of the shower incident in 02 Sandusky still should have been kicked off the team back in 97. Anything past the first investigation which he admitted to doing wrong in, he should not have been allowed with minors in any capacity. Paterno allowed him the be around kids and there for should be treated as a criminal not a saint that this college town thinks he is. He probably only raised all the money and donations to try to help his conscience out so he could sleep at night because he knew his best friend was molesting children and he let it go on for decades.

I'm not trying to defend Paterno at all, but it's pretty ridiculous to say he only raised money to ease his conscience. How do you explain the decades of fundraising previous to any of this?

Where are you getting that he was aware in 97? I haven't seen anything that indicates that to be the case.

What I find really hard to understand is the defense most of the accused of the coverup are using, that they did what was required of them - by informing their superiors, but not to the police. This includes Paterno and McQuerry, where is their moral and ethical obligation as officials and people in power to protect the vulnerable, there is moral rot though out the football program there, people who make decisions like this and potray them in actions cannot be trusted ever.

And the moral rot extends to the people protesting the firing of Paterno, I get how big a part college football plays in small towns, but it overrides your concern for the victims? Mind boggling.

I think it is fair to assume that Paterno and everyone else in power knew in '98, by then Sandusky had been investigated and admitted to inappropriate acts with boys, it was why he was 'retired' at 54 the next year, this stinks of the same kind of deal priests got, 'you arn't going to be arrested, you are going to retire and if you keep your mouth shut you can keep your office and your public reputation' I was listening to H. G. Bissinger, the author of Friday Night Lights who surmises that the reason the best linebacker coach in college football wasn't hired by any one else was because the word quietly went out to the other college programs as well.

It beggers belief that he wasn't charged in '98 and was still allowed to run a childrens charity. It seems likely that a few more 'adults' will be charged before the end of this and I wouldn't be suprised if Paterno ends up being one of them.

The second part I agree with, the first is pure speculation.

That Paterno knew why his assistant was retiring at 54 or that they let other colleges know and that is why the best college linebacker coach in modern history wasn't offered another job?

There is no way the college didn't know Sandusky was being investigated and the outcome, it was their police force that investigated the creep.
as to the other college part I agree it is speculation but it does explain how the guy that was credited with creating 'linebacker U' wasn't ever head hunted.
